Let’s explore the Connection between Faith and Physical Health and why it Matters for your overall well-being.
Today’s Bible Verse
“Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God. You are not your own, you were bought at a price (the blood of Jesus). Therefore honor God with your bodies.” 1 Corinthians 6:19-20
The church has long been a place where spiritual health and growth have been emphasized. Sermons and teachings have focused on strengthening faith, understanding the Word of God, and growing spiritually. However, there is one aspect of your life that is often left out of the conversation in church: your physical health.
It’s easy to see why physical health may be taboo in the church. It can be a difficult topic to broach, as it can often be uncomfortable and even convicting. Many of us don’t want to be held accountable for what we eat, how we exercise, and how we take care of our bodies. But the truth is that physical health is an important aspect of our overall well-being and should not be ignored.
As a Christian, you are called to lead society and to be an example to others. But how can believers lead when we are not addressing a third of our being? How can we expect to be the healthiest place on earth without addressing physical health?
God wants more for your life than a “get out of hell free card.” He wants you to thrive in every aspect of your life, including your physical health. Jesus himself said that he came so that you may have life and have it abundantly. The word “life” means vitality, fullness of life. Abundantly means over and above. God cares about your whole being, not just your spirit or soul.
In fact, Jesus performed many physical healings during his time on earth. Isaiah 53:5 says that “by his stripes we are healed.” This word “healed” means cured and made healthful. He is God, He could have shown up any number of ways to demonstrate that the Kingdom was at hand, yet He chose as He walked this earth to show his power and deity through the healing of the human body. Your physical body is of such great value to God that he even included your healing in the sacrifice of his son, Jesus.
As Christians, we are called to be good stewards of our bodies, which are temples of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 reminds us that we were bought at a price and therefore, we should honor God with our bodies. This passage may be referring to sexual purity, but it can also be applied to physical health. Gluttony is a sin just as much as sexual sin, and it can also defile our bodies, which belong to the Lord. I want to encourage you to live with the awareness that your boy is a vessel and a temple to be used for the glory of our Lord!
