One can’t imagine the sorrow of losing a baby – such immense pain and grief is a trial beyond what many couples can bear. This is the desperate situation Chris and Alyssa Quilala found themselves in 2014 when their son Jethro died. However instead of blaming God, as some parents would, they wrote the best-loved song ‘Miracles’.
Fortunately this couple were firmly grounded in God and their hope was in His Word so when tragedy struck they knew it did not come from their loving Heavenly Father but from the enemy who comes to kill, steal and destroy. Instead of alienating themselves from God they pressed in to Him and the Holy Spirit comforted them through the words of this beautiful song.
As the lyrics go: “The One who made the blind to see / Is moving here in front of me / The One who made the deaf to hear / Is silencing my every fear / I believe in You / You’re the God of miracles. / The One who put death in its place / His life is flowing through my veins.”

The One who put death in its place
The Quilalas had a revelation of Jesus’ power over death and could see their heartache in the context of eternity. As 1 Corinthians 15:55-57 says “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? … But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Miracles was featured on Jesus Culture’s 2016 album Let It Echo. Today it is sung by millions in churches across the globe. Watch it sung below by Jeremy Riddle & Steffany Gretzinger of Bethel Music with an exhortation by Bill Johnson of Bethel Church.
“Miracles is a song about choosing to believe the truth, that God is who He says He is,” said Chris Quilala. “As we held our son in our arms and prayed we had a choice: to believe God is good all the time and no matter the outcome He is and will always be the God of miracles.”
“I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember Your miracles of long ago. I will consider all Your works and meditate on all Your mighty deeds… You are the God who performs miracles; You display Your power among the peoples.” (Psalm 77:11-14)
“My wife and I could be stuck going around in circles asking God why we didn’t see the miracle we had hoped for. Instead of doubting God in the face of contrary circumstances we chose to move towards Him, to trust Him and to hold on to Him even more tightly.
“I wrote the song Miracles because, more than ever, I needed to remind myself constantly of who God is. If you need a miracle in your life don’t lose hope! Continue to believe and have faith to see impossibilities bow at His name. Our God is the God of miracles.”
Today the Quilala’s have four beautiful children. God has blessed them beyond measure, but He has also used the song, born out of their grief to set many people free.
‘This song got me through’
Many have been touched while listening. Sophia said: “God is the God of miracles… I was planning to kill myself. But God had a different plan and set me free. This song has been my life and got me through this season of my life. I am and will be forever thankful.”
God’s Own shared a comment echoed by many: “Just read your testimony on the story behind this song… You are a true inspiration, choosing to believe in God more after losing your son and holding fast to His Word.. you have just challenged my faith. Thank you so much.”

Jesus, our Miracle Worker
Come what may, Jesus is our miracle worker and in Matthew 11 he gives a profound description of what happens when the Kingdom of God is manifest. It comes in response to a question from John the Baptist who was in prison. He sent two of his disciples to ask Jesus if He was ‘the Coming One’ or should they look for another?
Jesus’ answer describes what we can expect from the God of Miracles: “Jesus answered and said to them, ‘Go and tell John the things which you hear and see: The blind see and the lame walk; the lepers are cleansed and the deaf hear; the dead are raised up and the poor have the Gospel preached to them. And blessed is he who is not offended because of Me.” (Matthew 11:4-6)
