Fire in the Bible
It’s amazing how fire is a common theme throughout Scripture. For the unbeliever, Biblical imagery surrounding fire can be terrifying as it represents judgment – but for the believer images of fire are life-giving. In the Old Testament God spoke to Moses out of a burning bush and in the Biblical account of Elijah and the prophets of Baal we discover the unlimited power of ‘the God who answers by fire’.
Yes, fire is incredibly dangerous, but the believer needs have no fear. In the story of Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, who were thrown into a fiery furnace, Jesus joined them in the flames and they were unharmed. What a powerful picture of God coming through for His people, and underlining the promise of Isaiah 43:2 – “When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze.”
Perhaps you have been through tough times and feel burnt out? Yes, we may be refined by fire, but we will never be destroyed by it. 1 Peter 1:7 encourages us to rejoice when we go through trials, as our faith is tested and purified by fire. And, in Hebrews 12:28-19 we learn that ‘our God is a consuming fire’, but that we should serve Him with reverence and godly fear as we are part of His Kingdom that cannot be shaken.
