A Ukrainian woman carried a stranger’s two young children into safety out of the war-stricken country.

A few days after Russian forces invaded Ukraine, Nataliya Aleyeva crossed the border from her country to Hungary to seek refuge. She had to flee the country alone, leaving behind her two adult children who were not allowed to leave under Ukraine’s mobilization decree. One of her children is a nurse, and the other is a policeman, they both had to serve the country in these trying times.
On the border, Nataliya met a man with his two young children desperate for help. The father from Kamianets-Podilskyi was not allowed to leave because Ukraine has banned all men ages 18 to 60 from leaving to fight for their country. There’s no other way for his two children to cross the border but to seek help from a stranger.

Nataliya was the only hope for this desperate father to send his children to safety. She agreed to carry his children and hand them over to their mother who would meet them in Hungary. The 38-year-old father hugged his children goodbye without the assurance of ever seeing them again.
With a stranger’s two kids in her car and a piece of paper with a cellphone number in it, Nataliya crossed the border to Beregsurany, Hungary.
“Their father simply handed over the two kids to me, and trusted me, giving me their passports to bring them over,” Nataliya said in an interview.
While waiting, the little boy’s phone rang and he began crying, it was his mother, Anna Semyuk. The 33-year-old mother, traveled from Italy to be with her children. She hugged her son and went to her daughter who was resting in the back of the car.
“All I can say to my kids now is that everything will be alright. In one or two weeks, we will go home,” Anna said.
She then hugged Nataliya to thank her for bringing her children to safety. They both cried as they find comfort after being through so much.
