Phil Pringle explains the true meaning and essence of Christian meditation.
Christian meditation
In Joshua 1:8, Moses’ successor was commanded to meditate on the Word of God. It says, “Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”
Moreover, “meditating on the Word of God” is read many times in the book of Psalms. But what does meditating on the Word of God really entail? Phil Pringle explains.

“Meditation is not emptying your mind,” he said. Contrary to what yoga encourages, Christian meditation is not emptying one’s mind. Instead, it is filling it up with God’s word.
“Christian meditation is filling up your mind with the Word of God, repeating it to yourself over and over and over and over like a cow chews its cud.”
Cows Chew Its Cud
Pastor and author Rick Warren explains this concept further in his article, “What Cows Teach Us About Meditation.” He wrote, ” If you look up a synonym for ‘meditation,’ you’ll probably find the word ‘rumination.’ Rumination is what a cow does when she chews her cud. She rolls her cud over and over in her mouth.”
When a cow chews the grass, it swallows it quickly. The ingested grass absorbs all the acids and chemicals in the stomach. But after a while, the cow burps it back up and chews it again, while adding another grass and then swallows it again. The process is repeated over and over until they get every nutrition available from the grass.
Similarly, biblical meditation is taking the Word of God and ingesting it, bringing it back over and over again until every spiritual nutrition is absorbed.
Moreover, Phil believes that meditating on God’s Word can transform one’s spiritual life, creating a deep, unshakable faith.
