This is one of the most common questions that every believer asks. “Why did God put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden of Eden in the first place? What was the purpose of it?”
The tree of the knowledge of good and evil wasn’t there to condemn Adam and Eve. If you read the book of Genesis, the tree was there to test two things: firstly their obedience and secondly their dependency. Would they choose to obey God or would they independently choose to seek outside knowledge, in disobedience to God’s commands?
The purpose of the tree was much deeper than a test of obedience. It showed God’s gift of free will. If the tree was not there, then there would never have been an opportunity to choose obedience to God over anything else.

Our God is not an authoritarian type of God. We are not His robots. We are His beloved creation. That is why He gives us free will – it’s our right to make our own decisions. He did this because He wants a relationship with us. There wouldn’t be a two-sided relationship if He just dictated everything to us. Your use of your free will deeply affects your relationship with God. Your choices will either draw you near to Him or push you further from His presence.
