This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success. (Joshua 1:8) According to the above Scripture, meditation (on the Word of God) is to study, speak, observe, submit, imagine, and understand. As you meditate or during meditation on the Word of God, Holy Spirit will counsel you and give you an understanding of the will of God and, as such, makes your thought agreeable to the perfect will of God.
God wanted Joshua to prosper and be successful, and He knew His children, the people He has chosen for Himself, can only prosper if they study, meditate, and do His Word, no other way. We should also understand that the Word of God is Jesus, Who is the way, the truth, and the life (See John 1:1-14, John 14:6). So, during meditation, you are giving the Holy Spirit to take over your mind, season your spirit, counsel, speak, and direct your ways.
Meditation begins from studying, and it also stands in between studying and doing God’s will because it will be challenging to do the Word of God without meditation. Meditation is a spiritual tool used by the Holy Spirit to give deep understanding, bring submission, and the driving force that will propel you to do the will of God finally. Philippians 2:13 says, “For it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.” God works in us by His Spirit to energize and create the power, desire, and willingness to submit to His will, which is for us to prosper (see Isaiah 1:19, 3 John verse 2). This is why God was specific with Joshua in Joshua 1:8 and to every one of His.
Psalms 119:97 says, “Oh, how I love Your law! it is my meditation all the day.” Apostle Paul also said to Timothy in 1 Timothy 4:15, “Meditate upon these things; give thyself wholly to them; that thy profiting may appear to all.” That is, Timothy’s spiritual growth and prosperity depend on how often he meditates on the Word of God (Psalms 1:1-3), which might be seen and acknowledged by all around him and heard of, of the people afar.
Meditation is like seasoning your spirit in the Word of God and feeding your spirit with the required spiritual food (Word of God). It is what you feed on that you will become.
Many Christians that don’t often meditate on the Word of God will find it challenging to be consistent in their character and even their spiritual growth. Today they are on fire for the Lord, and next will be a different story. Some might even be living a confused life. This is what 1 Timothy 4:15 says to us, to meditate on these things (Word of God), give ourselves wholly (absolutely, entirely, completely, totally, etc.) to them (Word of God) so that our profiting in Christ Jesus might be seen and acknowledged by all. Moreover, in keeping and doing the Word of God, you will be able to save yourself and those that hear you (see 1 Timothy 4:16)
Meditation on the Word of God is a moment the Holy Spirit get down into business with individual and minister to you in a unique way and charge you up. With the Holy Spirit’s help, meditation gives birth to new ideas, inspiration, revelation, fulfillment, and it will also lead to consistency in your character and spiritual growth.
Personal Experience of the Benefits of Meditating on God’s Word
By the grace of God, during August last year, I was praying for the grace of God to be able to write my new book titled “Prayers From The Heart Of The Word Of The Spirit.” During my meditation on the Word of God in the same month, Holy Spirit miraculously ministered to me and gave me revelation and inspiration. I was able to write and complete the book within two weeks, praise God. The book has nine sections. Each section of the book has forty prayer points by the inspiration of the Holy Spirit that will helps our daily spiritual growth. Section five of the book talks about the steps on how to meditate on the Word of God.
As you read this article, I pray that God will give you the grace to often meditate on His Word that can build you up (Acts 20:32) in the name of Jesus, Amen.
