During the graduation ceremony of the Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry, Brendon Bekker received the highly acclaimed Bill B. Johnson Award. He then shared his testimony about overcoming shame, insecurity, and sexual brokenness.
His Story
The 25-year-old Brendan Becker from South Africa grew up in a Christian home and witnessed how his parents loved the Lord.
“I was sent to a Christian school from a young age. So I knew all about the right things to do, to raise my hands in worship, and to read my Bible in the mornings,” he said.
He went on a ministry trip at the age of 14 and encountered God at a very young age.
Brendan recalled his first encounter with God saying: “As clear as day, I was standing there with my eyes closed and I could literally see Jesus walk up to me for the first time in my life. It felt like this man who I had heard of before and I knew the church served corporately. He was real to me at that moment.”

He added, “And it wasn’t just like He was saying “I love my people.” He said, “Brendan, I love you.” I can pin everything that’s happened since then to that day where I experienced the personal nature of Jesus.”
The year 2017 has been challenging for Brendan and his family.
“I feel like I was living a double life and a lot of pain and confusion and trauma from childhood kind of manifested. Just a lot of sexual brokenness and just big questions that were longing to be answered,” he said.

He decided to enroll in Bethel School of Supernatural Ministry and that was the start of his healing journey.
He described it as a “miracle after miracle” where divine opportunities were opened and he was led to the right people who helped him with his healing process.
Overcoming Shame, Insecurity, And Sexual Brokenness Part II
“I began to discover that the God of the universe liked me. He could list things that He liked about me. And if the God of the universe likes all these things about me, how can I not find the things in me to like as well, you know,” he said.
Brendan started praying for people, and many were healed. When he realized that God would use “not just the global body or prominent key leaders,” but also him, his faith grew significantly.
“You want to use Brendan, You want to use these hands and these prayers.” These were Brendan’s words to God.
However, after some time, his insecurities and past wounds resurfaced. That’s when he received a vision from God.
“Daily, I was battling comparisons and feeling insecure. If I closed my eyes I could see visually, I could see the trenches in me that I longed for the Lord to just cover up and to move on like nothing had ever happened,” he said.
God Qualifies the Called
“I remember sitting on my chair and feeling so overwhelmed with shame, seeing these well-worn paths. The grooves in me, the weakness in me that disqualified me. And then, in only the gentle, tender way, I felt Him come so close in that moment. I saw Him visiting all those places in me. The grooves and the trenches and the furrows that I wish he would just kind of patch up. And I saw his river gushing into me and immediately filling those parts,” he said.
Brendan added, “He was genuinely not doing what I asked. He wasn’t wiping over all the past shame and mistakes and weakness. But He was saying, “Brendan, these are the places I long to fill with My power, with My grace.” Our only hope is that He fills a weakness and His power is made perfect. His power is made perfect through what we think disqualifies us.
