Taylor Madu profoundly explained the difference between pruning and dealing with toxic patterns.

The co-pastor of Social Dallas, Taylor Madu, reminded her congregation to address the deeper issues within their souls. She discussed the profound lessons she learned from studying gardening, explaining that if people notice a yellow leaf on a plant, they can simply cut it, and everything would be fine.
“One yellow leaf doesn’t mean it’s bad soil. That means you just need to cut that thing off and keep it moving,” she shared.
According to her, some mistakes can be easily identified and pruned. However, toxic patterns can be observed in a plant. If it has multiple yellow leaves, it could indicate that something deeper is happening in the soil. She aimed to clearly identify these issues because sometimes people walk with unhealthy souls without even realizing it.
“There’s something with the mistakes versus patterns. Patterns are dangerous. Patterns, you need some boundaries,” she explained.
Pattern Vs. Pruning
Furthermore, she emphasized the importance of people identifying whether what they were experiencing was already a pattern or just a pruning.
“Yes, walking with God is a pruning process. But also, pay attention to signs that say ‘this is more than pruning’ — you may continue to prune, but eventually you’ll have no more life left due to the deeper issue— unhealthy soil (soul),” she emphasized.
Moreover, she encouraged those with unhealthy souls to humble themselves and take responsibility for their well-being.
“See the pain, feel the pain, and seek help to overcome the pain,” she said. She also reminded them that God, the Gardener, would assist them.
Lastly, she remarked, “Life is a gift. Life is a process. Invite the Gardener into your journey…. don’t accept anything less than a life of healthy living—the fruit of the spirit—love, joy, peace, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, self-control.”
