In one of Debra Amick’s Instagram posts, she recounted an experience that helped her recognize the significance of praising God even in the midst of agonizing circumstances. After her 21-year-old son’s tragic death, she had refrained from visiting the location where he had passed away for several months.
“I just couldn’t bring myself to go,” she recalled.
However, one morning, she unexpectedly felt a strong desire to visit the site. Accompanied by her husband, they went together. At the location, they walked around, allowing themselves to cry and pray. As they made their way back home, a wave of questions flooded Debra’s mind. She described the experience as if her heart was shattering once more. As she walked to the kitchen, she felt like God was speaking these words to her: “I want you to praise me.” Then, she answered God that she didn’t feel like praising Him at that moment. And then God told her, “It’s not for me, it’s for you.”
There was Jesus
Eventually, she decided to play some praise music, and a song she had never heard before by Zach Williams and Dolly Parton called “There Was Jesus” began to play. As she listened to the lyrics, the challenging questions that had been troubling her on the drive home started to find their answers.
“ I felt God’s presence all around me and His love so tangibly,” she testified.
Here are some of the encouraging lyrics of the song:
In the waiting, in the searching
In the healing and the hurting
Like a blessing buried in the broken pieces
Every minute, every moment
Where I’ve been and where I’m going
Even when I didn’t know it or couldn’t see it
There was Jesus
She then gave a powerful reminder for everyone, “We are not going to have the opportunity to praise God through pain in eternity. That time is now. I don’t know what you’re going through today, but I do know that as you praise God…even by faith, even when it’s hard, you will be transformed.”
