Worship Song

Isela grew up in a Roman Catholic family. But she experienced God’s love after her whole family followed the sound of a worship song.

Early Childhood

Isela’s parents had her when they were teeangers.

“My parents had me at a very young age. My mom was fourteen, and my father was sixteen. So, that’s already pretty interesting,” Isela said with a smile.

Their family was very poor, so multiple families were living in the same home. But that wasn’t the only struggle Isela’s family faced.

“I saw my dad physically hurt my mom a lot. He was a very abusive man, and he was very alcoholic. So, I grew up thinking that’s how a man should treat a woman. Where a woman stays quiet and a man can do whatever he wants. I always grew up with that mentality, and no matter what, I always respected my father,” she said.

Her Father was Gone

Everything spiraled out of control when Isela’s father left for good.

“My mother and father, because they love to party, decided to leave, and my father never came back. And I found out that he was deported. He was my world. And as daddy’s girl, that shattered everything possible for me. We were left with absolutely nothing. So, we were living in a hotel for a while, and then funds started to run out,” Isela shared.

They went from living in a hotel to being homeless and then living in a shelter. Isela was going to school during the day, then going “home” to a shelter at night. That was her life. One day social services started helping them and they moved to a small room in a house.

Hearing the Sound of a Worship Song

But one day, something peculiar happened. They heard music and followed it, not knowing where it would lead them.

“There was a festival going on and we had no money. My mom felt terrible that she couldn’t take us. And so we decided to clean the house which was weird because you know, we never cleaned. I remember we decided to get into our best clothes. Someone in the family just had the idea to “let’s go on a walk.” As we were walking, we heard worship music. And we had never heard music worship before. We were used to the yelling and everything, so it was very nice to hear. And I remember we decided to follow the music. And as we got to where the music was playing, there was a church. They were just worshiping at the park,” Isela shared.

The Sound of a Worship Song Saved a Family

Isela’s mother broke down in tears at the park. The pastor came up and prayed for them.

“And I like to say that he and his family rescued us. Because from that moment on, there was a rainbow in the sky, and it was like a new beginning in the park. That was the turning point for my family,” Isela shared.

The people in the park had taken the church outside of its four walls. It was the reason Isela and her family encountered God.

That same year, Isela decided to go to a youth retreat.

After the Youth Camp

“I remember encountering God for the very first time of my life, speaking in tongues and I didn’t know I was speaking in tongues at that time. But I remember I just fell in love with God. And I went home and it felt like nothing had changed. But I remember feeling in the middle of the night, I would just begin to pray, just interceding for my family. And I was twelve.

“Little by little, we started taking down the altars that we had, the idols. And my family is saved!” Isela testified.
