After receiving its A+ CinemaScore rating, the Christian true-to-life movie Jesus Revolution continues to surprise the film industry after passing $40 million at the box office.

The film has now grossed $40.2 million, making it the number 1 movie in the Lionsgate Studio since 2019, after the pandemic. In 2021, the studio’s top-grossing film was The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard, with gross sales of $38 million. And last year’s top film was The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent, grossing $20 million.
“The numbers are incredible, especially coming out of a pandemic,” producer Kevin Downes told Christian Headlines. He also added that the audience’s faith pulled the crowd into the theater.
God’s Providence
Meanwhile, Jon Erwin, the co-director of Jesus Revolution, believes that God’s hand is at work for the film’s success. God was present throughout, from the timing of the release to the spiritual anointing during filmmaking.
In an interview with CBN News, he expressed his excitement over God’s work. He said, “I’ve never, in my career, seen so many stories on social [media] of people using the film and lives being changed after the film.”
“I’ve seen posts of people getting baptized in fountains outside the theater or in a lake the next day. Or a spontaneous praise and worship service starting in the theater,” he added. “And then prayer happening in the theater long after the movie wrapped.”
Also, Jon revealed that this year’s release was also God’s intervention. They were supposed to start the film’s production in 2018, but then the pandemic happened.
“It was just an amazing symphony of timing,” he said.
Jesus Revolution follows the story of the hippie-led revival during the 1960s and 1970s. It focuses on three men, pastor Chuck Smith (played by Kelsey Grammer), evangelist Lonnie Frisbee (played by Jonathan Roumie), and pastor Greg Laurie (played by Joel Courtney).
