One mother generously shared how she disciplines her children, especially during tantrums and when they are hitting.
Tantrums and Hitting
Phylicia Heimer is the founder of “Every Woman A Theologian.” She firmly believes that how Christians understand and see God impacts how they deal with their relationships – that includes parenting.
She said, “Your theology impacts how you parent.”
As a parent herself, Phylicia integrates her view of God into how she raises up her children.
“If you believe God is harsh and quick to punish, you might be harsh and quick to punish your kids. If you believe God is all love and grace and does not give consequences to His children, you may become too permissive and lack firm boundaries.”
She continued, “But if your theology aligns with how God defined Himself in Scripture, your parenting will reflect both love & justice, grace & truth.”

“One of the best things we’ve integrated into parenting the little years,” Phylicia added, “is consistent, daily prayer with and over our kids, especially during discipline.”
“It shows our kids that God cares about emotions while maintaining a culture of both honor and intimacy. Since starting this, our kids now ask us to pray over them when they feel angry or sad.”
Points in Discipline
Additionally, Phylicia gives points on how she disciple her little ones.
- clear expectation: hitting is never ok. It’s ok to be upset, but never to slap or scream at someone.
- consequence: in this case, a time-out in the main space (a minute for each year in age). This removes them from the environment, gives them time to think and calm down.
- apology: in this case, he’s learning the words and pattern of apology
- prayer: invite the Spirit of God! This is so vital. Prayer is our first stop for “big emotions.” Teach them how to give it to God and invite Him in.
If you are a parent with a toddler or an expecting mom, take note of Phylicia’s points and try it yourself.
