Tim Mackie and Jon Collins, the team behind the Bible Project, are sharing insight behind Jesus’ title, the Son of Man.
Tim Mackie and Jon Collins
People in the New Testament often addressed Jesus with the title Christ, which means Messiah. But when Jesus was here on earth, He never used that to describe Himself. In fact, he often referred to Himself as the Son of Man.
So, Tim and Jon have created a video exploring Jesus’ name.
They first looked back to the book of Genesis, where God prophesied to the woman. He said she will crush the head of the serpent, but the serpent will strike his heel.
Son of Man
This prophesied seed of the woman is later introduced in the book of Daniel, chapter 7.
According to the Bible Project, the term is found in Daniel 7:13.
“I saw in the night visions,
and behold, with the clouds of heaven
there came one like a son of man,
and he came to the Ancient of Days
and was presented before him.”
The chapter tells about Daniel’s dream. In it, he saw four beasts that represented four kings and their kingdoms. Then, God on His throne, condemned the beasts and threw them into the fire.
Then “one came like a Son of Man (v. 13),” presented Himself before God and defeated the beast. God gave Him dominion, glory, and everlasting kingdom.
Tim and Jon also shared that this man will receive worship from all peoples and nations. They said, “All humanity worships and serves this Son of Man, alongside God. So, this is no ordinary human. This is like God-human.”
Then, they proceeded to present Jesus as the Son of Man.
“So, now you can see, why Jesus of Nazareth, when He came onto the scene centuries later, chose this title, “The Son of Man” for Himself. He was claiming to be that truly human one on a mission to confront the beast.”
