Brenmiller Energy, an Israeli company that started as a family business, is now poised to become a global leader in heat storage with the opening of the world’s first thermal energy storage plant. The new facility is located in the Negev Desert and is expected to become a manufacturing hub for the company.
In addition to the new storage plant, Brenmiller Energy has large storage projects in other parts of the world, such as in the United States, Italy, and Brazil. Brenmiller’s system takes energy from different sources—helping to reduce emissions from the industrial heating industry—and converts it into thermal energy, which is then stored in crushed rock.
The thermal system helps maintain a consistent supply of energy to the grid, which helps consumers save during high peak fluctuations and shifting loads on the grid. They plan to produce 4 gigawatt hours of energy by the end of the year. Much of the funding for the new plant comes from the European Union.
“Unveiling our [thermal energy storage] gigafactory marks a pivotal milestone in our company’s history,” said Founder and CEO Avi Brenmiller. “What started as a family business has grown into a company that can help the global economy’s efforts to decarbonize.”
“In order to reduce emissions in the industrial and heating sector, heat storage is required, which will link the changing availability of renewable electricity sources – such as wind and solar power – to needs that require heat around the clock,” Brenmiller added.
The company is headquartered in Israel and has been innovating in thermal energy storage for the last ten years. Israel is a pioneer and leader in energy (and water!) technologies—born of necessity for the start-up nation’s carving out life from the desert amid hostile neighbors over the last 75 years.
