Pastor Will Chung talked about being vulnerable as a Christian leader. He mentioned that even though he may be leading, deep inside, he was still bleeding.

The founder of Beloved Church, Pastor Will Chung, encouraged Christian leaders to create intimate spaces where they didn’t need to pretend about what they were going through. He mentioned the one time that Jesus looked and felt like wavering. It was in the Mount of Gethsemane. It was written in Mark 14: 31-33, “They went to the olive grove called Gethsemane, and Jesus said, ‘Sit here while I go and pray.’ He took Peter, James, and John with him, and he became deeply troubled and distressed.”
He explained that this was when Jesus said, “Father, take this cup from me. Take this cup. I don’t want to do this. This is too painful… but nevertheless, Your will be done.” Then, he compared that moment when Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. In Matthew 4, it was stated that Jesus rebuked Satan and said, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.’ Yet, in Mark 14, it was different. Jesus was wavering.

Being Vulnerable As A Leader
Furthermore, he elaborated, “The one-time Jesus wavered, He brought His disciples to watch Him struggle.” He explained that the scripture said that He brought His disciples and grabbed Peter, James, and John. Jesus allowed them to witness one of His most vulnerable moments on earth. For Pastor Will, it felt like Jesus said, “I know you’ve been watching me cast out demons… I need you to watch me struggle. I need you to watch me wrestle.”
Moreover, he highlighted that Christian leaders also had issues that they were working through, and they needed to invite the community to know. Then, he admitted, “I may be leading, but I’m still bleeding. I may be speaking, but I’m still struggling.” He also emphasized that without intimate spaces, leaders would fall into detachment and focus more on attendance than abiding in Christ.
