Jerome Tang
Jerome was born in San Fernando, Trinidad, to Paul and Bano Tang. His mother is of Indian descent, and his father is half-Chinese.
Jerome and Careylyn were married on August 2, 1997. Jerome has two children, Ayvin Seven and Aylyn Tang.
Married for 26 years are Careylyen and Jerome Tang. At Heritage Christian, Jerome first met her. The couple didn’t have much money when they first started dating, but they were happy and have always been together through their highs and lows.
They like spending time together and have numerous memories of going to different places. His family is inspired by him and his faith in God.
And now, he openly declares to the world that “coaching is ministry.”

Kansas State Coach
Following 10 seasons as the head coach of the nationally renowned Heritage Christian Academy in Cleveland, Texas, Jerome joined Drew’s first staff at Baylor in 2003. His first 14 seasons on staff as an assistant coach before being elevated to associate head coach for the final five seasons played a crucial role in the Bears’ ascent to national prominence.
On March 21, 2022, Jerome was appointed head coach of Kansas State, ending a 19-year tenure at Baylor.
He loves the sport, but he loves God more.
In a recent interview, he said, “I’d like to thank my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ for this opportunity that He’s given me, the many blessings that He’s placed on my life. I know my profession is coaching, but my calling and my passion is ministry.” This came after his Wildcats defeated Kentucky on Sunday, 75-69, to get to the Sweet 16 in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.
Answered Prayer
As much as Jerome is passionate about his calling, he also deeply cares for his team.
“And I love being able to spend time around these young men and just help them to grow and become great husbands who are going to be great fathers and leaders in their community. It’s just so much fun to do it through the game of basketball,” Jerome said.
A year ago, Scott Drew, Baylor’s coach, told Sports Spectrum magazine that Jerome had prayed about the head coaching opening at Kansas State.
“When he felt like God led him somewhere, he went,” Scott told Sports Spectrum. “He’s been more than ready for a long time. He just didn’t have the calling to go. I know no one is going to cheer louder or harder for them than I will, except when we play. He’s going to do a great job at Kansas State.”
But Jerome didn’t have it easy.
“It’s difficult to do what we do, but I wouldn’t want to be doing anything else. Anything in life that’s worth accomplishing or great is going to have difficulties in it. I’m thankful to be in a position where the things that are important to me—character, integrity, love, faith—I get to pour into my young men every day. I wouldn’t want anybody else doing it.”
