An incarcerated former gang leader shared his testimony about how he encountered God while in prison. He also shared how his mother became one of the reasons he joined the gang.
His Story
When Robert was young, he remembered how his mother hated him. His mother was physically and emotionally abusive, and it was the reason why he always was looking for love in the wrong places.
“When I was born, my mom hated me. She was very abusive, she burned me with a cigarette and dropped me on the floor,” Robert recalled.
But later on, he learned a more painful truth.
“From an early age, I realized that me and my mom had issues. I found out that my mom had actually been sold to my dad,” he said.
Unable to experience love at home, Robert thought he found it when he joined a gang.

It was the first time he felt like he belonged and he was loved.
“I actually have someone that really loved me and treated me like family,” he said.
But the gang life came with consequences, Robert was in and out of jail. While he was there, he inflicted pain on people he was jealous of.

“A lot of the pain that I felt when I got to prison, was inflicting it to people. Like if I hear that you got a visit, I’m gonna jump on you because you have a visit and someone loved you. It felt like you have people that love you and I had no people that loved me,” he recalled.

But that changed when he met God at the most unexpected time.
“I remember the day that God spoke to me because I woke up out of my sleep and I knew the devil was in my cell. I got so scared and I put the covers over my head. When I got to the shower, there was a Bible opened to Psalm 91,” Robert recalled. “I looked at it, but at the same time I looked at the closet and there was a chilling voice coming out of the closet. And I yelled, ‘God, you got to save me. I don’t know what is chasing me, but you gotta save me.’”
And God did. From then on, Robert saw to it that nothing would come in between his relationship with God. He asked for forgiveness and also learned how to forgive.
