A pro-life group rejoices over an answered prayer when Texas Court of Appeals ordered to keep 11-month-old Tinslee Lewis on life support.
Tinslee Lewis
Tinslee was born premature and has a rare incurable heart problem that has kept her relying on a feeding tube. In July 2019, she was placed on a ventilator machine due to chronic lung disease. The doctors lost hope for the little girl and say that she is in pain and will not get better.
Life Support
Cook Children’s Medical Center doctors decided to have Tinslee’s life support removed on November 10 after invoking Texas’ 10-day rule. The rule states that life-sustaining treatment can be withdrawn after 10 days, even if the family disagrees, if no other hospital or healthcare facility will take the patient.
According to the statement from the hospital, they tried to reach out to more than 20 facilities by which they all refused to take Tinslee. However, Trinity Lewis, Tinslee’s mother, is fighting for her daughter’s life.
“I want to be able to make that decision for her,” Trinity said. “She’s made it this far. I know she’s going to continue to fight for her life.”
Texas Right to Life
With the help of Texas Right to Life, her mother battled to overrule the judge’s ruling that would end Tinslee’s life. On January 3, the Second Court of Appeals ordered the Fort Worth hospital to not remove the life support from the 11-month-old baby.
“This gives us so much hope for Tinslee,” Kimberlyn Schwartz, a spokeswoman for Texas Right to Life, said. “This is a prayer answered.”
State Attorney General Ken Paxton and Governor Greg Abbott sent a letter, ordering the delay of the judges’ order.
“This case presents a life-or-death decision,” Attorney General Ken said. “The right-to-life and the guarantee of due process are of the utmost importance not only to baby Tinslee and her family, but to all Texans. I will continue to fight for Tinslee and my office will continue to use all necessary resources to ensure that she will not be deprived of her right to live.”
