The Senior Pastor of Lakepointe Church, Josh Howerton, provided practical tips to Christian parents who aimed to raise children who love Jesus. As a third-generation pastor, he reflected on his high school years, noting that some viewed it as cool and edgy for a Pastor’s kid to rebel. Contrary to this expectation, he cherished being a Pastor’s son. He proceeded to share the three things his parents did to raise him.

First, he acknowledged that nobody’s faith is perfect, but he observed that his parents’ faith was genuine. During worship, whenever he glanced at his father, he saw him move to tears. His father wasn’t simply leading a service but was truly worshipping his savior. Witnessing this authenticity inspired him to seek the same God his father knew.

Second, his father brought him into his world. While some suggest parents should enter their children’s world, which may work for younger children, he deemed it an ineffective long-term strategy. He believed that children’s worlds often consisted of foolishness and rebellion. Therefore, rather than his father immersing himself in his child’s world, he elevated him into his own.

For example, he recounted occasions when church staff members would gather for lunch and discuss ministry. His father allowed him to listen in on these conversations, lifting him from a realm of childish behaviors into one of wisdom and godliness.

Third, he emphasized that the individual sharing the most compelling stories would emerge victorious.

“My parents are always talking at the dinner table about marriages getting healed, single moms getting helped. Or that guy got freed from addiction,” he mentioned.

His parents’ stories held more power than those of the world.

Lastly, he remarked, “Parents, the most significant thing you may do with your life, it may not be something you accomplished but someone you raise.”
