Esther 2:15 says, “…she asked for nothing except what the King’s eunuch Hegai, who had charge of the women, advised…”
Last November, the Lord led me to study Esther, particularly chapter 2. I was drawn in fascination to the 12-month beautification process the women went through and how it related to our walk with Christ, and being set apart for Him.
Verses 13 through 15 hit me square between the eyes as I realized that each woman was given “whatever she desired” to take with her to the king’s palace, but Esther only took what Hegai advised. These women had very little hope for their future. If not chosen to be queen, they became concubines and the best they could hope for would be giving the king a child. Imagine being surrounded by such stiff competition with such little hope. Would you want to grab “whatever you desired”? Take what you could while you could?
Becoming Queen
Yet, Esther was able to deny that instinct, set aside her own hopes, dreams, and desires, and take only what Hegai (the one who knew the king) advised. It led to incredible favor, making her queen, allowing her to develop intimacy with the king, which then gave her favor when she interceded on behalf of the Jews. She became a historic example of how intimacy with God drives intercession.
The question is: How? How do we set aside everything we want to take up only what Jesus wants? Well, it starts with a choice; choosing HIM. Then, grace follows. Once we decide that we’re choosing Him over everything, His grace empowers us to follow through. And we’re able to make the choice because of the good Father He is, and His promise in Luke 12:29-32:
Say No To Worry
I repeat it: Don’t let worry enter your life. Live above the anxious cares about your personal needs. People everywhere seem to worry about making a living, but your Heavenly Father knows your every need and will take care of you. Each and every day He will supply your needs as you passionately seek His Kingdom above all else. So don’t ever be afraid, dearest friends! Your loving Father joyously gives you His Kingdom realm with all its promises!
Esther chose to give up her desires for someone else’s, and as a result, left a common life for a royal one. I fully believe her mantle is falling upon a generation of people who are willing to make the same selfless choice. The question is: Am I one of them? Are you?
