“Fireproof,” “Courageous,” “War Room,” and “Lifemark” were all made by the same filmmakers. Behind those hit movies are the Kendrick brothers, Alex and Stephen.
Actor and filmmaker Alex Kendrick sat down in a recent podcast conversation with actress Shari Rigby. He opened up about fixing one’s sight unto Jesus amid the achievements and worldly accolades.
“I want the Lord’s presence on the projects we work on,” he told Shari. “I want Him to be glorified, Him to do more through these projects and ministry avenues than I ever could. And I want to hear, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant,’ when I’m standing before Him.”
But, maintaining the vision did not come easily. Alex confessed that he, too, struggles with appearing successful in people’s eyes. But, now that they have tasted “a little bit of the awards and the status,” they thought it would be fulfilling. “It feels good for about 15 minutes, then it starts to fade, and I realize, ‘Lord, I just want you.'”
That is why Alex emphasized how important it is to have people check their motivations and their desires. God should be the center to keep oneself from being consumed by the world’s awards, finances, and success.
And to keep the Kendrick brothers in check, Alex shared that the Lord would point to passages in the Bible. “The more I got into telling stories in the form of feature films and books, Scripture was jumping out at me,” he said.
“And the Lord was pointing to the passages that talk about when you see a Pharisee or someone praying on the street corners to be seen by men, Jesus said that’s the only reward they’ll ever get. They’re not getting something from the Lord when they are [trying] to be seen by men.”
As a result, Alex reflected on his filmmaking efforts and faith.
“I started thinking, ‘Lord, I don’t wanna do these movies or books or speaking just to be seen by men.”
The Kendrick brothers revealed that behind the success of their movies is the substantial time for prayer before deciding the themes, storylines, and other elements that will align according to the will of God.
