A retiring airline pilot was brought to tears when the passengers of his last flight sent him off singing the “Irish Blessing.”
Retiring Pilot
Brian Lenzen has been serving American Airlines for decades. For 34 years, his career as a Minnesota pilot flourished. But the time has come that he is now retiring at age 65. So, during his last flight, he carefully picked the crews he loved to be with for the last time. The pilot then “chose Dublin as his final destination.” But he didn’t know that it would be an emotional and memorable day for him.
During Brian’s last returning flight, an Irish choir boarded the plane. And when they found out it was the pilot’s last flight, they planned to surprise him with an emotional farewell for his decades of service. So, the choir asked for the attendant’s permission to carry out the surprise for the pilot.
Irish Blessing
As Brian exited the airplane, the passengers waited for him. They then beautifully sang the traditional “Irish Blessing” to honor the veteran pilot. The song’s lyrics go:
“May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.”
“It was just a very special moment,” Brian said, as he was moved to tears. “I’m kind of an emotional guy anyway, and so I got a little tearful realizing that was for me.”
It’s heartwarming to see how the Irish choir went the extra mile to honor the retiring pilot. While they may be releasing blessings to Brian, they also bless many people with their sweet gestures.
