“Blessed” – a word that people use all the time, both in and out of the Christian world, but what does it really mean?
Let’s take a look at an example that comes from Matthew 5:1-11.
Every person on the planet wants to be “blessed”, but many people equate the word with “happiness”. In the eyes of the world, happiness has more to do with you circumstances than anything else. While being blessed / having happiness in the Biblical sense, has to do with an ultimate truth that comes along with being a disciple of Christ.
Let’s take a look at what Jesus says blessedness truly means…
Matthew 5:3-12
“Happy are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Happy are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted. Happy are the meek for they shall inherit the earth.
“Happy are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be filled. Happy are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy. Happy are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.
“Happy are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God. Happy are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven.
“Happy are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake.
“Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
You are already blessed
The world may have its own definition of happiness but those who follow Jesus know what these are the true markers of blessedness and happiness. Though they may not feel like fluffy definitions of “happiness”, there is beauty in knowing that we are overcomers. That we are having an eternal impact on the world.
May these words uplift your soul and remind you that the true definition of happiness comes from the Word of God and not from the definition of the world.
