A university student in the Philippines went viral for setting-up an “honesty store” to help him pay his own tuition and his siblings’ tuition.
University Student
The 20-year-old Joenel Malanog is an engineering student at the University of Southeastern Philippines in Davao City. Coming from a poor family who could barely afford to send him and his four siblings to school, he decided to take matters into his hands. In 2019, the young man went viral for his “honesty store” that was set-up on his campus.
During his free time, he sells snacks to his schoolmates to earn money for his family. However, his hectic schedule as a student hindered him to sell his goods, so that led him to do something innovative. Joenel set up an “honesty store”, and no one was manning it. It is surely a test of honesty for his buyers.
“GOD KNOWS,” he wrote on a signboard of his store. He also wrote Romans 6:23 on it.
Honesty Store
As a Christian, Joenel believed in the good nature of everyone so he knew that his idea would work. He was able to earn money while attending his classes thanks to his creative store.
The “Honesty Store” is open for everyone. All the snacks and goods that are being sold were placed neatly in containers and there is a separate box where buyers could pay for their purchases. The price list was written on a signboard.
“I am not around because I am attending my class, thank you,” Joenel also wrote on his signboard.
For his innovative idea, people are praising Joenel. Many publishing companies featured his store and the university’s Vice President for Academic Affairs also recognized his brilliant idea. The university students were also being praised for their honesty.
