Pastor Stephan Kilgore explained the Hebrew letter that turned Abram to Abraham.
Abram to Abraham
The founder and lead pastor of Revive Church shared how one Hebrew letter of Abraham’s name can give significance to God’s character.
Pastor Stephan said, “I learned that Abram to Abraham was so much more than what I thought.”
In Genesis 17:5, God gave Abram a new name. It says, “No longer will you be called Abram; your name will be Abraham, for I have made you a father of many nations.”
“In the Hebrew,” Stephan continued. “What God did is He took Abiram, and He increased it by interjecting this word or this letter in the Hebrew alphabet.”
According to Pastor Stephan, it is the fifth letter in the Hebrew alphabet.
“It’s kind of the English word. The English letter would be the H, Avrahim.”
Although it consists of one letter, in the Hebrew alphabet, that same letter means something. And it points out who God is and what He does.
“But the letter in the Hebrew that God introduced into Abraham’s name actually means grace,” Pastor Stephan shared. “He wasn’t changing his name, so he’d be the father of the many nations. He was changing his name to help him understand.”
The pastor believes God has a message for Abraham and all believers through this one Hebrew letter. “I have called you to a covenant. But I’m going to interject My grace right in the middle of this. I’ve got grace for you.”
He continued, “You feel like you can’t be the father of many nations. You already messed up. You got that surrogate pregnant and imploded your family. I’ve still got grace for you.”
Pastor Stephan’s sermon about Abraham and God’s grace teaches us that His promise for us does not depend on who we are. But according to His grace alone.
