Dr. Greg Gifford shared one of the roots of anxiety and it is the people’s desire to control the things around them.
Roots Of Anxiety
Dr. Greg Gifford, a certified biblical counselor talked with Kathy, a woman who was suffering with panic attacks and anxiety. He started by asking Kathy a profound question, “What is it that typically triggers anxiety?” Then Kathy answered that it’s because of her “What if’s” thinking. Dr. Greg then explained that her health was seemingly serving as a trigger to bring out her fears. “I think that’s where God can show you that you don’t have to bear this by yourself,” he said.
Moreover, he mentioned about what’s written on 1 Peter 5:7, “…casting all your anxiety on Him because He cares for you.” And in that same context, there is a command that says, “Don’t be anxious.” He also highlighted that the bible taught that people are worshippers. In fact, Romans 1 says that humans are worshipping creatures or worshipping the Creator. According to him, people would often say that they worship God, Jesus or the Holy Spirit. But the surprising truth is that, most of the time, people don’t functionally worship God. It’s not what their day-to-day worship looks like.

The Idol of Control
“Anxiety, and fear and worry, they often tell us something about ourselves. We’re struggling to discern what is mine to control and what’s God’s to control,” he remarked. At times, people even worship control. When that happens, worry will start to manifest. Controlling is never a positive thing. But often, people are micromanaging something.
Furthermore, he shared that the idea of controlling could be about managing or over managing things. “When we worship control, what takes place is that our desire to manage… our desire to be in the driver seat… it’s actually getting bigger than God,” he stated. He also added that people tend to micromanage things more and don’t trust God for the results.
