A Greek athlete fulfills the dream of a disabled woman when he carried her up the peak of Mount Olympus.
Greek Athlete
Greek athlete Marios Giannakou has fulfilled a disabled woman’s dream by selflessly carrying her on his back while climbing an almost 3,000-meter summit. The long-distance runner has many records of taking challenges. He has trekked 168 miles across Al Marmoum Dessert and has won the 93-miles cross-country race in Antarctica.
However, the most recent achievement he has done for a disabled woman means the most for him. The 22-year-old biology student Eleftheria Tosiou dreams of experiencing the summit of Mount Olympus. But, because of her disabilities, that dream seems to be impossible.
Disabled woman
When Eleftheria met and befriended Marios, the young woman’s dream seemed to be possible. Without hesitation, the Greek athlete who conquered the peak of Mount Olympus 50 times, planned to fulfill Eleftheria’s dream.
“For me, all international races, the medals and the distinctions so far, mean little compared to that goal,” Marios said in an interview.
Mount Olympus
With the help of an eight-member team, Marios carried Eleftheria on his back harnessed on an improvised backpack. They journeyed through a grueling Olympus’ tallest peak, Mount Mytikas for 10-hours!
Upon reaching 2,400 meters, the team rested for a night and continued their trek early the next morning. At around 9:02 AM local time, they have reached the 2,918-meter summit. Marios was able to fulfill Eleftheria’s dream of experiencing the summit.
“There is nothing more real than the dream,” Marios posted to his Instagram. “09:02 am we reached the top of Greece together with Eleftheria and our team”
The Greek athlete is now being dubbed as a hero for his selfless act for the disabled woman. He has been receiving praise and much support from people across the world.
