In one of his sermons, Pastor Gregory Dickow shared the number one remedy for anxiety and depression. It’s a timely reminder for people who have been feeling down and wanting to be happy.

According to his website, the pastor believes that “every one of us is in this world for a purpose. My God-given purpose is to help others experience change from the inside out.”
This belief is rooted in his own experience. At the early age of 16, he started selling drugs and was “a young man hopeless and battling depression, someone whose negative thoughts told him he’d never accomplish anything.”
Through his personal journey with God, the pastor understands that sometimes it’s hard to connect with Him. “I understand how painful it is to think you can’t connect with God. I’ve been through dark times in my own life. And I’ve met thousands of men and women who carry shame and deep hurt—too often from their religious upbringing,” he said.

In one of his sermons, the pastor talked about overcoming depression and anxiety. He started off by discussing one of the major effects of these conditions.
“What disables you from work, from being productive, from being successful, from being a contributing part of society, as a parent, as a kid, as a boss, as an employee, as a business owner. The number one thing that is keeping people disabled from their potential and their ability is depression,” he said.

He then explained that there is a scientific reason for it, noting that some people have a chemical imbalance in their nervous system. He believes that professionals can provide the right diagnosis and treatment. But at the same time, he also believes in the power of God’s word.
Gratitude
“He can heal us of depression. He can heal us of anxiety. But here’s His number one method of healing us from anxiety and depression. And that is perspective. Focusing on what we have,” he said.
As an example, the pastor shared the story of Adam and Eve. “What was the first commandment? ‘Look, Adam and Eve, eat freely from all these trees.’ The first commandment was to focus on what they had. And the curse of unhappiness and the curse of sin, and the curse of bondage, and the curse of being separated from God– all of that came because Adam and Eve focused on what they didn’t have rather than what they did have.”
The pastor proposed a remedy, and that is gratitude.
“Gratitude is the parent of happiness,” he said. “Gratitude is the parent. Happiness is the child. You will become thankful, which creates happiness.”
