God is speaking. God is also speaking to you…you just might not realize some of the ways He is speaking to you. It is time to know the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and raise our awareness of His voice in our lives. The relationship that was severed in the Garden was resurrected through the cross. It is only when one chooses to accept Jesus’ sacrifice that the relationship is fully restored.
Relationships, in order to be healthy, require communication. Therefore, it is necessary for God to speak in order that there might be a relationship. The Bible has numerous verses that speak to the promise that God is speaking. These are just a few,
- “Call to Me and I will answer you” – Jeremiah 33:3
- “Ask and you will receive, seek and you will find, knock and the door will be open” – Matthew 7:7
- “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you” – James 4:8
- “Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness and all things will be added to you” – Matthew 6:33
- “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow Me” – John 10:27
Clearly, God is speaking, but do you believe He is speaking to you?! Let’s take a look at a few of the ways that you can grow in hearing the voice of God. Often it isn’t that He isn’t speaking, but instead that we aren’t aware of the ways He is speaking to us individual. After all, every relationship is unique. Thus, your relationship with God and how He speaks to you is unique too!
God Is Speaking Through The Word
Psalm 119:1- 8 NIV – “Blessed are those whose ways are blameless, who walk according to the law of the Lord. 2 Blessed are those who keep his statutes and seek him with all their heart— 3 they do no wrong but follow his ways. 4 You have laid down precepts that are to be fully obeyed. 5 Oh, that my ways were steadfast in obeying your decrees! 6 Then I would not be put to shame when I consider all your commands. 7 I will praise you with an upright heart as I learn your righteous laws. 8 I will obey your decrees; do not utterly forsake me.”
God is speaking and one of the primary ways He speaks is through the Word of God. John 1:14 reveals that “the Word became flesh” which means that Jesus is the Word. When you read the Bible you aren’t reading a book. You are meeting with Jesus. Every word you read in the Bible is a conversation with Him. Reading the Bible on a regular, even daily basis, is one of the easiest ways to get to know Jesus and hear Him speak to you!
God Is Speaking Through His Presence
Exodus 3:2-6 NIV – “There the angel of the Lord appeared to him in flames of fire from within a bush. Moses saw that though the bush was on fire it did not burn up. 3 So Moses thought, “I will go over and see this strange sight—why the bush does not burn up.” 4 When the Lord saw that he had gone over to look, God called to him from within the bush, “Moses! Moses!” And Moses said, “Here I am.” 5 “Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.” 6 Then he said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob.” At this, Moses hid his face, because he was afraid to look at God.”
God is speaking and another common way He speaks in through encounters in His presence. In the story above, we see Moses encounter the voice of God while standing in the presence of God. Moses had to do two things. First, he had to notice that something was different than normal – the bush was burning, but it wasn’t consumed. Then he had to take the risk of moving towards the uncommon occurrence. Often, just as in this case, God reveals Himself in mysterious ways.
As you become aware and move towards the mysterious, risking what it may look like, God will speak to you. Remember, His thoughts and ways are higher (Isaiah 55:8). What might look like a freakish occurrence – oil filling numerous jars, creatures with eyes all over there bodies, the sun standing still – ended up being encounters with God’s presence. Lean into the mysterious, through the leading of the Holy Spirit, and you will find God is speaking!
God Is Speaking Through Creation
Romans 1:20 NIV – “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.”
God is speaking through creation. Every mountain, bird, flower, bug, and cloud in the sky – all creation – is revealing who He is. Taking time to stop and “smell the roses” or become aware of creation that is speaking all around is another simple way to become more aware of God’s voice in your life. What revelations await your willingness to pause and observe all He has created just for you?!
God Is Speaking Through Others
Hebrews 3:12-14 NIV – “See to it, brothers and sisters, that none of you has a sinful, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God. 13 But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called “Today,” so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness. 14 We have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original conviction firmly to the very end.“
You were not create do life alone. The Father, Son, and Holy Spirit operate in union and communion with one another and, as humans, we are crated in their image. We need others and many times the way God is speaking in our lives is through the lives of others. Are you listening?
