Church Members Gather To Worship After Surviving Deadly Hurricane Ian

The members of Southwest Baptist Church in Fort Meyers gathered in their damaged church building to worship the Lord after Hurricane Ian hit the state.

Southwest Baptist Church

Last Wednesday, Hurricane Ian hit Florida as a Category 4 storm. The storm caused damage to billions of dollars worth of properties and killed at least 100 people. The Southwest Baptist Church in Fort Myers is one of those properties damaged by it, however, the members of the church still chose to gather and worship the Lord a few days after the catastrophe.

“We got people here that lost their homes. We’ve got people here that we didn’t hear of for quite a while,” Senior Pastor Bob Kasten said.

Many of the church members fled the area after some warnings about the hurricane before it made landfall. Some who were displaced from their homes took shelter at the church. But floodwaters soaked the church and the wind destroyed its roof.

“Right now, it still hasn’t sunk in. I think right now they’re still kind of, at least with me, kind of numb,” Pastor Stephen Kasten, Bob Kasten’s son, told The Weather Channel on Sunday. “A lot of them are just grateful that they survived what they went through, and they’re praising God. That’s why we’re here today.”

Hurricane Ian

Testimonies of how the Lord spared their lives that day were also heard from the members. A week ago, pastor Stephen even preached about how Jesus walked on water in the storm while inviting them to gather in the same place after the hurricane subsides.

“Last Sunday, I actually did a message where Jesus walked on water in the storm. And I was like whatever happens in the storm, we’ll be here Sunday,” he said. “We’ll worship God no matter what. And so I think most of the church has that same feeling, and we’re just here to see who shows up. A lot of members, they did leave, and that was great.”

The Lord Promised That If You Ask, You Will Receive

The Lord promised us that if we ask, we will receive.

Lord’s Promise

In an episode of Gather, Ben and Jodie Hughes share the truth about God’s promise. The promise that if we will ask, we will receive. Ben emphasized what the Bible says about us asking the Lord. It clearly said that if we knock, the door will be opened, if we seek, we will find what we’re looking for.

“The Bible says this, ‘If you ask, you will receive,’” Ben emphasized. “Jesus said it, if you ask, you shall receive, if you seek, you will find. It doesn’t say if you ask, maybe, maybe you’ll receive, no. It says if you ask, you will receive.”

There are no prerequisites nor qualifications for that, it’s a promise for everyone who follows the Lord.

“It’s a promise, there are no qualifications put on that,” he added.

Ask, You Will Receive

Everything that the Bible says is true because the Word of God is living and active. Let our hearts be aligned to His Words and let our hearts trust the truths of God.

“We can expect as we talk about these the truths of God that He will answer us, that things are shifting,” Jodie said. “Even in our own hearts and expectations right now because the Word of God is living and active. Right now, that means as we release these truths, things are shifting in our own hearts. Faith is rising, the expectation is rising, hope is rising, and a knowing in our own hearts that God cares, He listens and He answers.”

God Sees And Knows What’s In Your Heart

God sees and knows what’s in your heart.

God sees us

In an episode of Gather, hosts Ben and Jodie Hughes or Pour It Out Ministries share a word of encouragement for everyone. They emphasized how God knows each one very well and He doesn’t just know us from the outside. He also knows what is inside our hearts. He sees and knows it all.

“We’re simply talking about the God who knows us and He’s very present,” Ben said. “He sees us, He sees the stuff that we’re dealing with, He sees the dreams, He sees all of those kinds of things.”

Ben then referenced John 1:47-48, where Nathanael was surprised by how Jesus Christ knew him very well.

“Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit! Nathanael said to Him, ‘How do You know me?’ Jesus answered and said to him, ‘Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you.’” -John 1:47-48

God knows our hearts

Jesus knew who Nathanael was and He also knew that his heart was not deceitful.

“Not only did Jesus see Nathanael, not only does He see us, but He also knew his heart,” he explained. “He knew his heart so it’s not just He’s seeing him from the outside… no, He actually saw into his very heart.”

Everyone wants to be known, seen, and acknowledged, it is normal for us to desire those things. But there is no one is this earth that knows us the way God does. He is the only one that knows every part of us, everything about us. “All of us want to be seen, all of us want to be known, and all of us need a God that’s personal.”

There’s No Shame In Needing Breakthroughs

There is no shame in having things that need breakthroughs and needing the breakthroughs from God.

Breakthroughs

In an episode of Gather, hosts Ben and Jodie Hughes talked about praying for breakthroughs. They began their message by emphasizing that God is the God of breakthrough. And that there is nothing wrong nor nothing to be ashamed of if there are things in our lives that need breakthroughs.

“God is the God of breakthrough. Knowing that God is the God of breakthrough, means that there are things to breakthrough. I love that God calls Himself the God of breakthrough because He wants us to know that there’s nothing wrong with having things to breakthrough. In fact, that’s when we need the God of breakthrough.”

Testimony

Difficult situations or struggles are normal and everyone goes through those moments at some point in their lives. Those moments are a part of our lives that would create testimonies for us. God uses even the ugliest situation you have and can turn it into something good that will bring glory to His name.

“There’s no testimony without a test right? It’s the first part of it, there’s a test and then there is the testimony. There’s a breakthrough because there are things to break through. God calls us overcomers because there are things to overcome.”

No Shame

If you are someone who feels ashamed for still having struggles despite having a relationship with God, let go of the shame. There’s no shame in needing breakthroughs. We are an overcomer because there are things that we need to overcome.

“If you’ve been feeling the weight of shame or ‘what’s wrong with me,’ can we just tell all of that to go right now? Because let’s be real, we all need to press into the God of breakthrough at times. We all need to lean in for contending prayer and to believe together.”

Never stop contending and praying for breakthroughs in your situations because God is the God of breakthroughs!

Difficult Situations Fuel The Burning Fire In Our Hearts

The difficult situations that we faced are the ones that are fueling the fire in our hearts that is burning all the unhealthy and unnecessary things in it.

Fire in our hearts

In an episode of Gather, hosts Jodie and Ben Hughes share words of encouragement with everyone. They are encouraging us to keep the fire in us burning bright. That fire in us is the one that is burning all the things that are unnecessary for us and are weighing us down to run the race of faith freely. And that fire is no other than God himself.

“The Bible says that God is a consuming fire, well a fire burns the dross, a fire burns the stuff… A fire helps burn the stuff that is unnecessary, the things that are unhealthy, the things that just hold us back and weigh us down. And I think if there’s a season where we need to have the stuff that weighs us down burned off, this is that season,” Jodie explained.

Keep the fire burning

Just like any other fire, once we ignore it for some time, it will just burn out. And for us to keep the fire of God in us burning, we have to intentionally fuel it up.

“The fire in our heart, just like a natural fire, needs to be intentionally continually stoked. If you just let the fire go, it’s just going to eventually burn out… So it’s so important that we’re actually, intentionally, maintaining that fire in our heart,” Ben said.

Our difficult and challenging situations produce oil that fuels up the fire in us. Just like how crushing olives produces oil, all the situations we have been through, that in some way crushed us, will also produce a priceless oil that we can offer to God.

“I’m going to take the oil from the things I’ve walked through so that the fire in me can burn even brighter.”

If you are someone who is going through a difficult situation, take heart and know that all your suffering will not be in vain. The Lord will turn your situation into something good.

In an episode of Gather, host Jodie and Ben Hughes share a word of encouragement to everyone who’s facing difficult situations right now. The founders of Pour It Out Ministry want to remind us that we are strong because of who we are in Christ.

“In Jesus, because of who He is and who we are in Him, we are made strong,” Ben said.

We are made strong by Jesus Christ’s victory over the cross. It is not by our might nor by our power can we overcome any situation. We can win victory over any difficult situations only if we rely on the power of Jesus.

“God is with you, He is with you, He is with you. That’s why the Bible tells us, ‘Let the weak say I am strong.’ Not because of who we are, but because of who we are in Him, who we are with Him, and who He is in us.”

Made Strong

“So he said to me, ‘This is the word of the Lord to Zerubbabel: “Not by might nor by power, but by my Spirit,” says the Lord Almighty.’” -Zechariah 4:6

Anyone can come to the Father. Let us come to Him in full surrender and authenticity of our hearts. We can be real with our God because He is our good Father.

“We need to be real with God because how can we expect God to comfort us and give us what we need when we’re not ourselves before the Lord. If you’re in a hard season, go to God and be real. Talk it through with Him and then allow Him to add His strength into the mix.”

God Who Answers

In an episode of Gather, Ben and Jodie Hughes encourage everyone to keep on praying and asking our heavenly Father because He is the God who answers.

“God is the God of miracles and He is the God who answers,” Jodie said.

The founder of Pour It Out Ministries referenced Matthew 7:7 to emphasize their message. If we just ask and seek the Lord for everything that we need, He will graciously give it to us.

“If you ask you will receive, if you seek you will find, if you knock, the door will be open,” Ben said.

Good father

But it is important for us to know who God really is before we can ask Him. We should know His character, how loving He is, and how good is He as a Father when we come to him in prayer.

“It’s really important when it comes to prayer, when it comes to asking God for the things that we need, that we know who it is that we’re asking. And we know the nature and character of the One that we ask.”

Let us always remember that God is our heavenly Father and He is our provider.

“A father relationship is a relationship and it’s why it’s so important. The whole asking process, the whole talking to God process, is about building connections and building relationships. I love that He says ‘Call me heavenly Father,’ because he wants a relationship with us His children.”

“He is the God who answers and we come to God who is our Father and He is a perfect Father and He loves to give good gifts,” Ben emphasized.

God Is Healing Sickness and Diseases Right Now!

“Let faith rise, He is the God who heals,” Jodie Hughes said.

God is healing

In an episode of Gather with hosts Ben and Jodie Hughes, they prayed for healing and shares testimonies of healing to emphasize that God is the God who heals. The couple has seen many miraculous healings by the power of God during their missions and even through their media ministry.

They have received many messages of testimonies that God healed people as they received their prayers through TV or the internet. God is moving even through media!

“Right over the power of media, God is moving, there’s no distance in the Spirit. And I believe that He is healing you right now,” Ben said.

Kingdom of God

Ben then referenced Matthew 10:7-8 to share the difference between the Kingdom of God and of darkness.

“Jesus is saying go and as you go, preach saying ‘Hey the Kingdom of heaven has come near.’ And what does that mean? It’s going to look like this: the sick are going to be healed, the dead are going to be raised, the lepers are going to be cleansed and the demons are going to be cast out.”

The good news is that the Kingdom of God has now come to us. Healing will be upon everyone who needs healing right now!

“So what it says to us is that the kingdom of darkness looks like sickness, looks like death, looks like being treated like a leper, rejected, despised, and tormented by demons. That’s what the kingdom of darkness looks like. But the good news that Jesus told us all to go out preaching is that the Kingdom of heaven has now come near.”

“God is moving, why? Because the Kingdom of heaven has come near to you today,” Jodie said.

God Is Big Enough To Deal With Our “Small” Problems

Small Problems

Whatever is in your heart right now, know that God can see it. Whether it is pain, burden, or victories, God knows how your heart is feeling right now. He is not a God who is distant from us, He is closer to us than anything else.

“God’s not distant and God isn’t out there somewhere. God’s personal and He sees you and He knows you. When God knows us and He sees us and He knows what’s going on in our heart, that means God can speak to what’s going on in our heart.”

No matter how small your situation may look, God would never overlook you. He will certainly move in your circumstances because that’s how powerful and big He is.

“The power of God is not diminished by you asking Him for what seems small in your life… God is big enough to deal with our small problems. It’s not only that He’s big enough, it’s that He wants to.”

Sharing The Gospel As You Go

Sharing The Gospel

When the Lord commanded us to preach the Gospel, it doesn’t mean that we have to stand on the streets and preach the Gospel as many powerful revivalists do. There are so many ways in which we can preach the good news to the world. You can preach the Gospel in your own way in your own community and family.

“You don’t have to be able to stand up on a street corner to preach the Gospel,” Ben said. “That’s why we love to call it the ‘as you go Gospel.’ The words even ‘preach the Gospel,’ that sound intimidating, it literally means this, it just simply means to be a teller of good news.”

As citizens of the Kingdom of God, we are all called to tell the world about Jesus Christ. The world needs us the most right now. Amidst the pandemic, hopelessness, and troubles that many are facing, let us share the hope that is found in Jesus Christ.

“We can all do that, we can all release hope, we can all speak good news,” Jodie said. “In this season, we need to speak good news. There’s so much bad news constantly, let’s be a teller of hope, a teller of what Jesus is doing.”

Why?

The couple then emphasized that in sharing the Gospel, we must prioritize knowing why we do this. Rather than how we can do this. And the answer to why do we have to share the Gospel is because the world needs Jesus Christ.

“There is a lost and dying world out there who are in fear, who are in hopelessness and they don’t know that Jesus is alive, that He loves them.”

Jesus wants everyone to know about Him and how He loves everyone so much that He called us into the great commission. Always be ready and prepared to boast about what Jesus did for you and for all!
