A virus. This brings to mind chicken pox and computer issues. Funny, one is a physical virus and one is a technical virus. But the effect is the same.
The definition of VIRUS is quite interesting – “An infective agent that is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host. Also, a code which is capable of copying itself and typically has a detrimental effect, such as corrupting the system or destroying data.”
Sin is a Virus
I want to first just say I had my own experience recently with a virus; the chicken pox virus which lays dormant in our system until it is reactivated into something much more hideous – Shingles! I have to say, I learned a lot from Shingles. I mean really, you either have to try to glean something of value from a horrid experience like that, or it is completely senseless and without purpose. To go through all that pain, I figured I would attempt to learn all I could.
A destructive agent that lies dormant within us, waiting to be activated or reactivated. Sounds like an alien flick! Oh, the truth here that rose up here and smacked me in my pain ridden body!
Sin is a virus.
No one likes to talk about sin, but we all do it. We were born into sin. It is part of the human experience and something we all battle every day of our lives – the good and bad choices, the destructive habits, the age-old battle of good and evil – ever present in humans. “For all have sinned (ALL), and come short of the glory of God.” (Romans 3:23)
So if sin is a virus, it can lay dormant in us as a part of our fallen nature. This basically just means, we can’t escape it. It is in us. It is “capable of copying itself and corrupting our system”. Whoa. It can be activated and reactivated. Whoa. Like the chicken pox virus, it is a sleeping giant within. Whoa. A virus awakened destroys you from the inside out. Whoa. Biggest whoa of all is we are ALL carriers of this virus called sin.
But Jesus
Oh, thank you Jesus – THIS is why He came to earth! I knew this all my life; I got saved at 4 years old. But only just NOW do I really GET IT! As carriers of a sinful fallen nature, we would need someone to save us from ourselves. We always think it is others’ faults or influence that causes us to fall, but generally, the problem is just us. I don’t know about you but I have found that I am my biggest enemy. Of course, I am. I am a carrier of my own deadly soul virus.
I wish I could bash you all on the head and say, “DO YOU GET IT?” You cannot save yourself. This should be a relief really. Good works and great deeds and warm, fuzzy offerings won’t cut it, so that IS a relief really – I don’t have to prove anything to you or to anyone else of how good I am, or am NOT. I just need to be saved. I just need Jesus. Jesus is the pain killer and the medicine to cure the sin virus.
It was THE most wonderful gesture of love that God would send His only Son to earth to save mankind from a deadly virus that threatened to destroy every single one of us. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so that whosoever [all of us] believes in Him shall be SAVED.” (John 3:16)
Saved from what? A deadly virus. Sin.
