Pastor Jerry Flowers: ‘Following Jesus Sometimes Comes With Heartbreak’

Pastor Jerry Flowers Jr. boldly stated in a message that “following Jesus sometimes comes with heartbreak.”

The Cost Of Following Jesus

Influencer Jessa Wait posted a video of herself listening to a message by Pastor Jerry Flowers Jr. of Time Of Celebration Ministries Church. The post resonated with many, garnering over 100,000 likes on Instagram.

Contrary to the prosperity Gospel that some people preach about following Christ, Pastor Jerry boldly shared the truth. He emphasized the reality of following Christ, stating that it’s not always smooth sailing. Life’s challenges can come, testing your faith and causing pain. He highlighted that this truth should not be concealed when preaching the Gospel.

It Comes With Heartbreak

“Why aren’t we telling people that following Jesus sometimes comes with heartbreak,” the pastor said. “It’s painful to let go of your will for His will. That’s not always easy. We’ll sing ‘God, I just want Your way.’ But what about when that crushes what you wanted? How do you deal with that pain? Can we talk about that pain?”

He explained that there may be times when things don’t go as hoped, and it is during these moments that one’s true commitment to following Christ is revealed.

“How about the pain of training your heart to not love what you love?” he added. “I got to train my heart to not love what I used to love. Because I can’t love obedience and love rebellion at the same time. How do you deal with pain when you’re trying to trust God’s timing but you feel like He forgot about you? How do you deal with that? How do you still trust with that? How do you still pray with that? How do you still fast with that?”

Pastor Jerry remarked that if such truth were withheld from people, “when it gets hard, we quit.”

“When it gets hard, we fold, when it gets hard, we walk away. When it gets hard, we doubt Jesus, when it gets hard, we doubt the Gospel. And I want to teach us today how to steward pain.”

Pastors Discuss How To Follow The Intimate Promptings Of Holy Spirit And Hear From God On Recent Podcast

On a recent podcast episode with Tim Ross, Preston Morrison discussed the value of following the intimate promptings of God speaking through His Holy Spirit.

“As His children, we GET to be His messengers,” Morrison wrote in his post caption, which shares a clip of the video podcast. “Stay in tune with His voice so that when He prompts, you can deliver a love note from Him to someone who needs it.”

“Prophecy is one of the ways that I feel like the Lord helped me hone the hearing ear. So it wasn’t just that He was speaking it’s that He wanted to slide a little Post-it note to someone else through me. That’s how I see prophecy. I’m just the messenger. Are we impressed with someone who says, “somebody gave me this note for you, here you go. Just take it.?”

“No, we’re not impressed. It’s the one who wrote the note that we’re impressed with. So, one of the ways, I think, that people can hone that hearing ear is to press in on behalf of others. Not to where you have a word for them everytime. But it’s as simple as this: you go in the grocery store. ‘Holy Spirit is there anyone in this grocery store that you would like to deliver a love note to through me?’

“Learning to follow the prompting, those little promptings of the Holy Spirit.”

Hearing the intimate promptings of Holy Spirit is for all believers

Ross and Morrison even address believers who feel God doesn’t speak to them in a similar way:

“We both know someone’s listening saying ‘God doesn’t talk to me like that’. Here’s what I would say: He wants to. But if we don’t follow the intimate promptings of the Holy Spirit, we aren’t going to hear the intimate speech of the Holy Spirit.”

Walking In The Rain | Daily Devotional

Looking up at the gloomy clouds over head and watching the rain fall to the ground, I realised something. The grey clouds were necessary for the rain to be able to fall, which in turn allowed the grass and the trees to grow. It’s like that with God. He uses the most grey and gloomy situations in our lives to grow us. We actually grow more from those situations than anything else. But are we walking in the rain?

Walking In The Rain

Have you ever watched people walk in the rain? It’s a perfect picture of the world’s response to Jesus Christ. First, there are the people who use an umbrella. They don’t want anything to do with the rain. Then there are the people who don’t have umbrellas, but they pull their coats or shirts or put newspapers over their head. They’re in the rain, but they don’t enjoy it at all. They are in it because they have to be. Then there are the people with no umbrellas that are actually excited that it’s raining and are enjoying the tiny drops beating down on them.

Types of Christians

In wondering which of these categories I fall into I realized there is one more type of person…the person that I often am. The person who is in the rain without an umbrella who wants to enjoy the rain, but they’re so concerned with their cell phone or books or wallet or shoes getting wet that they miss the splendor of being in the rain.

These different types of people in the rain mirror the characteristics of the Christian life. Some don’t want anything to do with it. Others profess to being a part of it, but really are just in it because they feel they have to be. Still others are in it and want to be in it, but they get distracted by the cares of the world. Finally there are those few that have totally surrendered all their wants and needs and are fully committed to Christ.

Who Are You?

God has something to say about this…Revelation 3:15-16 says, “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth“.

The moral of the story…Be in the rain completely surrendered or take the umbrella. God wants us wholeheartedly standing in His rains!

In a society where the temptation to just conform to the patterns of this world is everywhere, following Jesus is not easy, but it’s always worth it.

The Cost Of Following Jesus

Following Jesus is more than just sharing Godly posts on social media or owning paraphernalia with Bible verses on them. It’s more than just going to church on Sundays or being active at church. It’s about your heart, your soul, and your life as a whole. Have you given your whole heart to Jesus? Are you faithfully obeying His commands? Do you consult Him every time before you make final decisions? You see, our body is the living sacrifice.

In Romans 12:1-2, Paul addressed a letter to the Romans in the past concerning our lives being a living sacrifice for Christ. He wrote, “Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—His good, pleasing and perfect will.”

The Challenge In Information Age

Through this message from Paul, we can see how he encouraged the church in Rome to renew their minds constantly. If we apply that principle today, this advice from Paul the Apostle is very critical because we are in the information age. A generation with too much information every day needs a reboot each time by reading the Word of God. Because nowadays, it’s easier to believe things shared on social media even though it’s fake than discerning real truth from God’s perspective.

That’s why relentless woman, choose to follow Jesus and learn to take time listening to His instructions. In that way, you’d always be at the center of His will, and no one can snatch you away from there. It won’t be easy, but it will always be worth it because Jesus is worth fighting for.

What If We Didn’t Retreat?

“If you want to take the island, burn the boats”, words spoken by Julius Caesar more than 2,000 years ago. “Take the island” means CONQUER. There is a high price to pay for taking the island, particularly if you burn your own exit so you can not possibly leave. It is the concept of leaving yourself NO other option – it is the essence of Queen Esther’s words, “…and so will I go in unto the king, which is not according to the law: and if I perish, I perish.” (Esther 4:16) I am going forward at all costs in the face of danger, which means I am leaving myself at the point of no return – it means I can’t retreat.

HISTORY LESSON

I can only imagine that Caesar’s men thought he had lost his collective mind when he told them to burn each and every ship they had just sailed in. It was a clear visual to all watching that there would be NO going back, an all or nothing venture at hand. They were there to war with the Celts and leaving ships in the harbor was leaving a way of escape in their moments of imminent fear and weakness to retreat. I am guessing that Caesar KNEW they would be scared enough to run, so he took away their only way out. Really, he had brought them to a new level of commitment – that giving your all, or die moment.

Jesus had the same message for His followers. “But Jesus said to him, No one having put his hand to the plow and looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.” (Luke 9:62) Looking back did NOT fare well for Lot’s wife. Her cautionary story is enough to shake us up! (pun intended) When you move forward, there will be times that you absolutely must NOT look back.

Sure, there are definitely times TO look back – to figure out what went wrong, to assess the past in order to plan the future, to fix broken places – of course. BUT there will be seasons when life will require you to burn your ships in order TO move forward. “ Let your eyes look directly forward, and your gaze be straight before you.” (Proverbs 4:25)

WHAT IF

What if though?! What would humanity look like if we gave this life journey our all, holding nothing back – scared yes, but doing it anyway. What if we didn’t retreat? What if we fought through to the death? Not a physical death generally, but a death to self – to pride, to fear, to all the things that hold us down and hold us back. What if we gave all? “The Lord our God said to us in Horeb, you have stayed long enough at this mountain.” (Deuteronomy 1:6) Or, in this harbor!

What if God is calling us at this hour in history to burn the ships in order to take out enemies in our own lives that need to be conquered! We would send a strong signal to the enemies of our soul that we would push back; that we would NOT run; that against all odds we would hold fast. You don’t think they would panic and be the ones to run themselves? NOTHING is more intimidating than a person who will NOT back down. It is the sign of a true warrior. There is also a personal power rush (of the good kind/not narcissistic) when we know that we know that we KNOW that no way/no how are we going to quit or stop or retreat. NO. Nope. Not gonna happen. No thief can steal that kind of soul commitment from you.

IN IT TO WIN IT

“But I do not account my life of any value nor as precious to myself, if only I may finish my course and the ministry that I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of the grace of God.” (Acts 20:24) THIS is when you realize you would die for what you live for, when the two interlock (lock in place) simultaneously and cannot be undone. THIS is the strength of a true soldier, fighting on life’s battlefield. And, winning. “In it to win it.” But it has to look like something. It can’t be just another check on a to-do list. It has to be the real deal – you MUST burn the ships. Only YOU know what those look like in your own life. I know mine.

I see a trip to the harbor in my near future, with a lighter. I am personally tired of being yanked away by laughing, jeering enemies who call out my weakness and my fear. I am going to use this against them – like a “WATCH ME” now! You think I can’t? I WILL. And, like Queen Esther let our mantra be – “If I perish, I perish.” But I will NOT run. I will NOT retreat.

Are You A True Follower of Jesus? Being A Blessing

Today if Jesus were to come to your doorstep asking for food, would you send Him away?

If Jesus was on the street with no clothes to cover Him, would you pretend you didn’t see Him?

Would you visit Him in prison?

Would you ignore Him if He was blind, deaf, or physically challenged?

If He was an orphan with no one to care for Him, what would you do?

If Jesus was suffering the plight of a destitute man, an aged person, a terminally ill person or stranger with no help, would you shrug your shoulders and go away?

Do You Care?

These questions are for every Christian individual, family, and church. How many believers can say that they know a deaf person or have befriended a blind or physically challenged person? How many believers visit the orphanage nearby and share the love of God with the children there?

Jesus cared for each of these people. He cared about the plight of the children and families of prisoners who have no help. Jesus cares about the children whose HIV-positive parents died, leaving them on the streets. Jesus never ignored such people. Yet we find that this is what some Christians and churches do with disadvantaged groups of people.

Jesus Cares For Disadvantaged Persons

In Matthew 25:42, 43 Jesus says, “I was hungry and you gave Me no food, I was thirsty and you gave Me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not welcome Me and entertain Me, I was naked and you did not clothe Me, I was sick and in prison and you did not visit Me with help and ministering care.”

Many people from disadvantaged sections of society have not yet witnessed any interaction from believers or churches. If we need the word of God every Sunday, don’t they need to know the Word through actions that express God’s love to them? Sending money to the missions once a year is nothing more than lip-service. Can you imagine the plight of people who suffer unbearable pain and have no one to comfort them? Could they believe that God loves them when not a single believer is showing His love to them?

A Just And Caring God

Psalm 146: 7-9 speaks of the Lord as One, “Who executes justice for the oppressed, Who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets free the prisoners. The Lord opens the eyes of the blind; the Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous [the upright in heart]. The Lord protects the strangers; He supports the fatherless and the widow.“

Isaiah 61:1 says, “The Spirit of the Lord God is upon Me, because the Lord has anointed and qualified Me to preach the Gospel of good tidings to the meek, the poor, and afflicted; He has sent Me to bind up and heal the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the [physical and spiritual] captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound.”

The Consequences Of Not Caring

Matthew 25:45, 46 tells us, “He will reply to them, Solemnly I declare to you, in so far as you failed to do it for the least [in the estimation of men] of these, you failed to do it for Me. Then they will go away into eternal punishment, but those who are just and upright and in right standing with God into eternal life.” Please note, believers who fail to do these things receive eternal punishment.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to give good tidings of the Gospel to disadvantaged people. These verses show us God’s heart towards them. We need to examine our role as followers and disciples of Christ. In times of recession and economic slowdown, have you wondered how missionaries and NGOs take care of disadvantaged people?

Called To Share Jesus’ Love

Imagine if believers showed love to the disabled. Imagine if they showed love to children whose parents died of HIV. They would grow into healthy members of society. Imagine if believers loved the children of prisoners, who struggle to make ends meet. This is not for those in ministry only. He has asked all of us to do this so we can fulfill the commission He gave us in Matthew 28:19, 20.

This is not a one-time activity. It is meant be a way of life for us Christians. The ‘least in society‘ are ‘the most important people for Jesus.’ Let us think of ways in which we can be a blessing to them so that when we stand before the Lord after our time on earth we can hear Him say,“Truly I tell you, in so far as you did it for one of the least [in the estimation of men] of these My brethren, you did it for Me. Come, you blessed of My Father [you favored of God and appointed to eternal salvation], inherit [receive as your own] the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.” (Matthew 25:34, 40)

40 Day Challenge Day #23 – Moving On

What do we do when God asks us to move on but doesn’t give us a detailed map of the journey ahead?

When Abraham was asked by God to pack up his stuff and leave home he quite reasonably replied, ‘Sure, but where to?’ God then stunned him by saying that He wasn’t going to tell him up front!

Moving on… but to where?

Many thousands of believers find themselves, at this point in history, in a very similar scenario. They know they can’t ‘stay’ but don’t know where to go. Some are feeling pretty hacked off that God is not giving them a detailed map. This is not geographical (necessarily) but more our journey and relationship with Him.

I’m certain we are now living in a new era, which is being heralded from Heaven to those who are listening. There is a restlessness that can’t settle for mediocre anymore and it’s not based in either rebellion or desertion. Is there more?

Have you heard yourself recently thinking “There’s got to be more than this to following Jesus?”

The Only Journey That Matters

God is pushing (coaxing) many of His chicks out of their nests. He wants us to learn to fly as He intended and ‘mature’ into eagles. This involves us coming to a place of such dependence on Holy Spirit that we are happy (content) to be ‘moving on’ without a map (yes really). Maturity for the believer has much more to do with a 24/7 connection with God than with a regular ‘checking in’ with Him at church meetings. Imagine a small child walking with their father – they are not worrying about the destination or obstacles on the way because they are holding the hand of the person they trust.

Think about it! The only journey that really matters is the journey within.

Let me ask you the following: What if this hunger and restlessness comes from God? Why would He allow this? Do you believe you were created to ‘fly’? What does that actually mean for you in everyday terms?

40 Day Challenge Day #5 – A Radical Heart

Being a Christian is quite often synonymous with being conservative, risk averse, cautious, slow to adapt to change and set in our ways. This is intriguing, because if you look at the life of Jesus he was pretty much the complete opposite. Jesus had a radical heart and His life was evidence!

Don’t Miss Jesus

People’s opinion of Him when He was here on earth was that He was a radical, revolutionary, non-conforming, alternative, theologically dubious , and irreligious prophet to name a few. They missed the Messiah because of their preconceived ideas, their religious spirit and their jealousy.

Will you ‘miss’ God because of the limitations you place on how, when and where He can express Himself? Let’s not sanitise, sugar coat or conveniently ignore the heart and ministry of Jesus. He spent much of His time with undesirables. What an ungodly term! He spent time with the people who were despised, abused and shunned by society. Look at this man! He is a glutton and a drunkard! Jesus spent all His time with tax collectors and other sinners. (See Matthew 11:19, Matthew 21:31, Mark 2:16, Luke 19:2, Luke 5:30, and Luke 7:34)

Do You Have A Radical Heart?

Looking at the life of Jesus it cause to raise, an often awkward, question that we each need to answer. Am I following the example of Jesus or am I not? Ask yourself, honestly, what is my perception of the marginalised in society? What, truthfully, is my heart towards those who blatantly sin or blatantly live in constant sin? Do I feel the need to criticise and correct people who break the “rules”? Or can I, like Jesus, radically reach out in love?

This is a point in history when God is calling us to be fearless, fluid and take risks. Another word for this is faith! Ask yourself, how am I doing with that?

Are you hiding the God-given identity that you have because you are afraid of how others will perceive it? Does your destiny lie unfulfilled because it’s too risky, scary or go against the grain of society? It’s good to ask Holy Spirit to reveal what He sees and answer these questions. There are lives at stake…

Are You Worthy of Jesus?

The Crucial Question: Are you worthy of Jesus?

“Are you worthy of Jesus? Before answering, let’s consider the following story. Elijah goes through the field where Elisha is plowing with twelve yokes of oxen (see 1 Kings 19:19). Passing by, he throws his mantle over Elisha, disrupting life as he knew it. Elisha’s reactions showcased that he understood the importance and beauty of what God was calling him to do.

So, when Elijah asked, “Go back again: for what have I done to thee?” (1 Kings 19:20) Elijah knew his actions would have to outweigh any response he could offer.

How did he react?

He slaughtered the oxen, fed the people, said goodbye to his father and mother, and went to minister to Elijah (see 1 Kings 19:21) and didn’t stop to question if this was his new reality or if God had called him to be a prophet. He recognized the necessity to part with the past and choose God. Aware of his weaknesses, he first dealt with them to surrender in fullness to his calling.

As his name signifies, “God is my wealth” or “to whom God is salvation,” Elisha chose what and who could not be taken from him (see Luke 10:42).

So, Is Jesus your salvation and wealth?

Surrendering to be Found Worthy

Jesus said: “Anyone who loves their father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me, and the one who loves their son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And the person who doesn’t take up their cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me.” (Matthew 10:37-38)

He left no room for interpretation. If we choose anyone over Christ, then we do not deserve to be called His disciples or friend. We are found wanting, not suitable for recognition as one who has been with Christ.

At times, we believe our life more valuable than the treasure in the field (Matthew 13:44), or not worth giving up for the rare, goodly pearl (see Matthew 13:45-46). Jesus calls us to the unknown with Him, not always providing answers to the questions we have. Instead, He warns us, “The person who finds his life will end up losing it, and the person who loses their life for My sake will find it” (Matthew 10:39).

What does He mean by this?

If we live life according to our rules, obeying the lies of our insecurities, and hiding in corners when life gets tough, we’ll willingly walk into hell. In the end, these actions sum up to disobedience. The sad part, however, is that in choosing this path, we forfeit the magnificence of experiencing God’s glory and the splendor of His love!

Instead of gaining anything, we lose everything.

A Moment of Reflection

No person can serve two masters, or supreme authorities (see Matthew 6:24). We either love one and hate the other, for we cannot please the Lord and also please those around us.

So, at this moment, we must ask ourselves:

Do I value the opinion of anyone more than I do the commands of Christ?
Is anyone held in higher esteem than Christ in my heart?
Am I worthy of Christ?

Jesus said that it’s impossible for offenses to not come (Luke 17:1). Even John the Baptist, who fulfilled prophecy and prepared the way for the Lord, questioned if Jesus was who He said He was when he sent his disciples to ask the Lord: “Are You the one who should come? Or should we look for someone else?” (Luke 7:19)

Jesus’ response? “Blessed are those who don’t become offended in Me,” or in other words, “the blessing of heaven comes upon those who never lose their faith in Me no matter what happens.” (Luke 7:23 TPT)

A Call to be Found Worthy

When the Lord leads you into a storm, don’t lose heart. He does so because you have “needs of endurance so that after you’ve done the will of God, you might receive the promise. It will only be a moment, and He who will come comes and doesn’t tarry.” (Hebrews 10:36-37)

Now, brethren, “we are not of them who draw back to perdition; but of them, that believe to the saving of the soul.” (Hebrews 10:39) So, choose Christ even if fear grips you by the throat and commands you to fall back. Choose Jesus, for you will only ever be free in His love. (James 1:25)

Be found worthy of Jesus.

The Jesus Revolution: It’s Back, And I Am Here For It

The 70’s laid claim to the legacy of “The Jesus Revolution”, as the hippies of the1960ss were turning to Jesus! I would know – I was part of it. The fire burned bright and I’ve been searching for that spark ever since. I think we are at the door of a new Jesus Revolution.

There have been a couple of these through the ages. The first one was when He walked the earth, and basically WAS His own revolution on foot! He did the opposite than the religious world expected of Him – He healed the leper, raised the dead, was friends with prostitutes and tax collectors, had 12 followers who were…NOT religious at all!

Jesus Revolution: His Way

Jesus always spoke in parables, didn’t preach from a pulpit, and shared His message on hillsides and boats. He did go into a synagouge once – the time He angrily flipped over their tables because they were making the church a place of business. I am 100% certain He would rather be in attendence at Kanye West’s Sunday Service on the hillside of California, than most churches.

But why?

Do we really REALLY know Jesus? Who was He? He Himself was intentionally a revolutionary. He actively and passionately pursued the lost. “For the Son of Man came to seek and save the lost.” (Luke 19:10)

Jesus came to upset the norm and to knock over our tables. And He came to set our hearts on fire, with the fire of Heaven! It was never just about a Sunday School invitation, though for many of us it started there. It was all about a revolution, revolting against the powers of darkness. “What does it profit a man if he gains the whole world, but lose his own soul?” (Matthew 16:26)

Jesus Freak

As a Christian teenager in a public school, I was labeled a “Jesus Freak”! Again, I have NEVER felt more on fire for God than I did during that time. I unashamedly carried my Bible to HIGH SCHOOL with me. And I wore big ONE WAY JESUS buttons. I stood in front of my jeering classmates time after time giving oral reports on the Jesus Revolution. Fearlessly, I went street witnessing with my church friends. I have always longed to find that part of me again, wondering if my own soul could be brought back to its original innocence and if that fire could ever burn again.

From the time Jesus walked the earth, revolting against the status quo of religion till the 1970’s when Andre’ Crouch proclaimed that “the blood will never lose its’ power”, until now in 2019 when Kanye West is the musical voice of a new Jesus movement – let us remember in fear and trembling and humility that GOD chooses whom He chooses to change the world. From 12 unruly men to hippies on the beaches of California, to Sunday Service with Kanye, it is a revolution. “I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion.” (Romans 9:16)

Jesus Revolution Is Here

I am so excited about what I feel stirring inside. It is NOT about a man, or the music, or the lights, or the building. It IS all about JESUS. He loves mankind enough to meet us here in 2019 and beyond, exactly where we are and give us exactly what we need to find our way back to Him.

If you are going to revolt, be on the right side, revolting for the right cause. “Then some Pharisees and experts in Moses’ teachings came from Jerusalem to Jesus. They asked, ‘Why do your disciples break the traditions of our ancestors? They do not wash their hands before they eat.’ He answered them, ‘Why do YOU break the commandment of God because of your traditions?'” (Matthew 15:1-3) THIS is Jesus; the One who attracts rough fishermen, hippies, Millennials and ALL who recognize their need for a Savior. “Whosoever” is all of us!

He is the same as He was back when He walked the earth. Jesus is the same Jesus from the 1970’s Jesus Revolution. He is the same Jesus showing up today through one unlikely but willing and available human.

“Moses replied, It is not the sound of victory, it is not the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear.” (Exodus 32:18)

If I had a ONE WAY JESUS button still in my possession, I would wear it to Target. Let’s all do this thing together. Let’s change the world.
