Jamey previously coached with Coastal Carolina University for five seasons. Now that he’s working with the Liberty football team, he told his student-athletes to “embrace.” He believes that “When you embrace something,” “special things can happen.”
His Christian Faith
The new coach also shared four leadership principles he wanted to instill in the players’ mindset. The four include “competition, discipline, accountability, and purpose.” He then shared the journey about his Christian faith, which he thought was the most important.

Jamey accepted Christ at 14 years old. But it wasn’t until seven years later that he began to be serious about his relationship with Jesus. It happened after Jamey met an accident during a game that shattered his ankle. Since then, he has followed Christ with all his heart.
“When you follow something, you’re willing to give up something for yourself. Because you believe so much in what you are following,” Jamey said.
A Christian First, A Football Coach Second
The coach explained that it’s not about the title you’ve been given but your identity in Christ.
“I think it’s so hard, especially in sports or in anything you’re associated with, you define yourself by what you do,” he explained. “‘Hey, I’m a football player or a football coach.’ No, I’m a Christian who happens to coach because that’s the journey, and the platform God’s given me.”
Further, he shared wisdom with students on how to be a Champion for Christ. He told them that they have a “purpose.”
“You’re here to get to know Christ better,” he told them. “And when you leave here, that’s preparing you to go transform lives and impact people. Be bold for Jesus.”
Jamey explained that being a Champion for Christ does not necessarily mean being a winner each time. Instead, “A champion is someone who pursues a goal consistently through ups and downs and challenges. I think if you’re boldly wanting to be a Champion for Christ, you’re going to get challenged. People are going to say things about you. They might make fun of you. They might do different things to try to make you feel less than you actually are. A Champion for Christ is bold enough to continue to live out their faith.”
