A Ukrainian nurse lost her legs and four fingers on one hand in a mine explosion this past March. Depressed with her situation, her family and husband lifted her up and decided to hold a wedding in the hospital she was recuperating in. The video of her and her husband sharing their emotional first dance went viral online and touched many.
Ukrainian Nurse
Oksana Balandina and Viktor Vasyliv danced to the tune of their love and life in a hospital ward in Lviv, Ukraine. Their first dance was not what they expected, but they are still grateful that they can have one.
On March 27, Oksana almost lost her life when a landmine exploded amid the Ukraine-Russia conflict as the couple walked home. The situation happened so fast that Oksana only managed to shout to Viktor, “Honey, look!”
Viktor was behind her and came out unharmed. “When it happened, I gave up in despair; I did not know what to do. I saw her not moving,” he recalled.
Oksana lost her will to live upon recovery when she discovered she was no longer the same. She thought she would only become a burden to the family, so she wanted to quit.
Keep on living

But, her family and husband did not give up on her. They were very supportive, helping Oksana restore her spirits. She resolved, “I need to keep living. It is not the end of life. If God left me alive, that’s my destiny.”
The couple will travel to Germany for Oksana to undergo further treatment. She wanted to be back on her legs, though they would be prosthetic, so that she could still support her two children.
May Oksana’s hopeful story inspire us to continue living whatever should come our way. God will not leave us, and He makes all things work together for our good for the glory of His name.
