An off-duty firefighter says, “God put me in a place where [my son and I] were running late on purpose” to save someone in need.
Off-Duty Firefighter
Off-duty firefighter, Benjamin Wootson, said to WFTV-TV that he was late for his son’s soccer practice that morning. He remembered seeing a sheriff’s cruiser approaching him. When he checked in his rearview mirror, he saw the patrol car collide with a pillar supporting the overpass.
Around 10:30 a.m., Matthew Luxon of the Seminole County Sheriff’s Office experienced a medical emergency. According to the sheriff’s office, the deputy was headed toward Orange Boulevard and Wayside Drive in Sanford. That was on Saturday when he crashed into a concrete pillar.
But that particular morning, an off-duty firefighter was at the right place at the right time.

“I thank God that he was there at that time,” said Sheriff Dennis Lemma of Orlando Fire Department Lt. Benjamin Wootson, who saw the entire ordeal unfold.
“I immediately pulled a U-turn at the next intersection and rushed back,” Benjamin said. “By the time I got on scene, there was a little bit of flames on the underneath of the vehicle, the engine compartment was already on fire.”
Additionally, Benjamin claimed to have seen “two golf ball-size flames” near Luxon’s legs. He stated that as soon as he removed the officer from the automobile, the vehicle caught fire.
Benjamin then radioed someone for help.
Right Place at the Right Time
“Matt had successful surgeries into the late hours on Saturday,” Lemma said. “But make no mistake, he has a long road to recovery ahead of him. The support of our Seminole County and the greater Central Florida community will help Matt pull through now and into the immediate future.
“I also spoke with Orlando Fire Department Lt. Benjamin Wootson, who heroically rescued Matt from his patrol unit moments after his crash and just before the unit caught fire,” Lemma added. “Lt. Wootson, who was off duty and also very kind when we spoke, simply reminded me that ‘this is what we do.'”
As for Benjamin, he believed that it was God who led him there.
“God put me in a place where [my son and I] were running late on purpose,” he said. “I was in the right place at the right time to save an individual.”
