The largest field hospital in Spain closed as healthcare workers celebrated and escorted out the last of the nearly 4,000 recovered patients. The hospital operated for 40 days and recorded only 17 non-survivors.
The largest field hospital
The field hospital had 5,500 available beds and was the largest field hospital not only in Spain but in all of Europe. It was set up in the IFEMA convention center in Madrid. Madrid is the epicenter of the outbreak in Spain. Spain is the 2nd country with the most confirmed cases, numbering 248,301.
On May 4, the hospital hosted a closing celebration in honor of the healthcare workers and staff who risked their lives for the infected. 1,000 healthcare workers dedicated their lives to helping. Amazingly, none of them got infected. People refer to it as “the miracle of IFEMA.” They danced to their anthem song, “I Will Resist”, in their battle against COVID-19. Their celebration of life went viral.
Solidarity in Madrid
From the first moment it opened its doors, many people and businesses already supported the field hospital. The solidarity of every network made the hospital’s management easier. Municipal markets in Madrid organized systems to deliver fruits and vegetables to the center.

Bibliotodo reported companies such as Renfe and Teatro Real donated material from their own warehouse for linens, patient shirts and protective coats. The Angel Schlesser brand also delivered 1,000 robes created by the Higher Fashion Design Center of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. While Telefonica installed free data connectivity for their convenience. Similarly, Naturgy also supplied free gas to offer extensive technical means for any emergency.
Today, IFEMA has disassembled the field hospital. But medical staff preserved all underground facilities and kept medical materials in the event a possible outbreak may reoccur again. Healthcare workers will be ready to once again join the fight.
