5 Ways to Overcome Stressful Family Relationships

We don’t get to pick our family. I am often brought back to Joseph’s story when considering sticky circumstances with family. Not only was he abandoned by his eleven brothers, they sold him into slavery out of jealousy.

Like Joseph, how you choose to respond in relationships to others is what you are responsible for. Who has God called you to be in these relationships? Be constantly reminded of this as you pray into your family dynamics and how you can best represent Jesus to them.

1. Be Spirit Led

The most important leader in your life is the Holy Spirit. He has answers for you! Allow Him to fill and motivate your thoughts, words, and actions. Ask Him to fill your heart to overflow with His power, presence, and love for the people in your life.

2. Manage Your Triggers

Only you are responsible for the triggers you have. Take initiative before conflict occurs in your family to recognize and proactively know how to address your heart when emotionally triggered.

3. Get Your Hopes Up

God knows you and your family best. Let the truth of His word fill you with all hope so that you are not living with fear or anxiety for the potential stress that could come from your family dynamics. There is always room for God in seemingly impossible circumstances.

4. Learn When to Step Away

Sometimes conflict is best left unresolved for a period of time. Respect the boundaries you have for yourself and clearly communicate that you can engage in conflict when it is respectful. You are worth it.

5. Remember Things Can Change

Your circumstances are not permanent. As believers we know that we are storing up heavenly treasures in this life. But even more so, God is working in your family, whether there is evidence to see it yet or not.

Family Of Man Who Nearly Died From Car Crash Credits Prayers For His Survival

A man who nearly died from a fatal car crash survived the ordeal, and his family credited prayers for his miraculous survival.

On May 19, 2022, Nikita visited his mother-in-law, Olga, at her home. Olga walked him to the driveway when he left. Moments later, she suddenly heard a loud crash. She ran to the scene and saw her son-in-law lifeless inside the wrecked car.

Olga immediately called 911 and her church prayer chain. At that point, she felt helpless because the rescue hadn’t yet arrived, and Nikita had no pulse. But she did the most powerful thing she knew how—she prayed.

“I just start praying, I speak life..” she recounted. “Because I know God can do miracles. It’s nothing impossible for the Lord.”

Prayer And Miracle

Soon after, Nikita started breathing back to life again. She witnessed the miracle before her eyes. But even though that was the case, Nikita was barely out of the woods. He suffered from “a fractured vertebra, collapsed lung, torn spleen, and traumatic brain injury.”

Meanwhile, Nikita’s wife, Alona, was approaching her full term with her baby in the womb when the accident happened. It deeply broke her heart to see him barely surviving all his life-threatening injuries. But just like her mom, prayer was the only thing she could do. She believed in God for a miracle. Furthermore, more and more people also started rallying with them in prayer for Nikita’s life at that point.

“We had to lean into Him [God],” Alona recalled. “He was the only One that could carry us through it all.”

But despite her faith, Alona admitted how she battled with hopeless thoughts that she would lose her husband. Until God spoke to her amidst all the noise, “Your husband will not die. Do not fear.”

And in the following days and weeks, Nikita’s prayerful family witnessed the miracle before their eyes.

Powerful Testimony Of A Woman Forgiving The Men Who Took Her Innocence

Keizha Valencia recounted her story of how her life spiraled out of control after the men she knew took her innocence. On CCF Women2Women Ministry’s YouTube page, she shared the power of God’s forgiveness.

Her Story

When Keizha attended her first college party in 2013, a family member kissed her against her will. Shortly after, at another party, her best guy friend violated and eventually assaulted her. This incident wasn’t the first time a relative had molested her.

“I remember I would quickly pray to God, ‘Lord, I don’t understand why this is happening to me. I won’t get angry at You, I just ask that you deliver me from this.’ And every time I would pray, God would quickly put me back to sleep and I would just pretend that it was all a bad dream,” Keizha recalled.

She kept it a secret since those who took advantage of her were among the closest to her. But then it happened again.

Because Of The Men Who Took Her Innocence

“I continued to get drunk and attended parties until 2016 when I was sexually assaulted for the fourth time. It was then that I started to ask myself, ‘Is this really all I’m worth?’ I thought if my body was all that people valued about me, then I would embrace it,” Keizha painfully recalled.

She began drinking and using drugs. Keizha even got her good-natured friends to join her in her sinful behavior. She ran away from home and entered into a toxic relationship. The more she sinned, the more depressed she became, using it as a cry for help and attention. One day, she overdosed and attempted suicide. Keizha’s family found her in time, and she was admitted to the hospital.

“At the time my parents didn’t understand why their one sweet girl suddenly changed,” she said.

Forgiving The Men Who Took Her Innocence

One day, she was walking by a church and heard someone telling her to go inside and pray. On that day, she cried out to God for hours, wailing in pain. Over time, God slowly opened her eyes to see that she had been living in sin. He then allowed her job, friends, relationship, and everything else she had to be taken away. When she had nothing left, He rebuilt her.

“As God forgave me for my sins and sacrificed His life on the cross, I was also able to forgive the men who raped me and my relative who also molested me. With God’s urging, I eventually told my family about the sexual abuse I had experienced. And praise God for my family for loving and accepting me in spite of my sin and caring for me even as I hurt them,” Keizha said.

Studies Show That Fathers’ Faith Have More Impact On Children

Research studies indicate that the faith of fathers has a significant impact on their children. If fathers are dedicated believers in Christ, their children are more likely to embrace and follow the same faith.

Fathers’ faith

Nancy Pearcey, an evangelical author, presents a 35-year longitudinal study asking how parents pass on their spiritual and religious convictions. The results revealed two significant factors. Firstly, having a close bond with one’s father was found to be even more influential than a close relationship with one’s mother.

When Nancy shared this fact with one of her classes, some of her female students expressed indignation and discontent. Nancy told them, “I’m sorry, but that is a fact. Fathers have influence, whether they want to or not.”

She added, “If fathers are committed Christians, children are more likely to keep the Christian faith. If mothers are committed Christians, it’s a lower number. It still has an impact, but the number is significantly lower.”

Furthermore, the second key finding shows that the relationship with the father must be warm and intimate. Nancy said, “It depends on the warmth and love and closeness of their connection with their children.”

Impact on children

According to her observations, even if the father is a pillar of the church, a moral exemplar, and possesses a perfectly correct theology, if he is perceived as cold and distant by his children, it is unlikely that they will remain in the faith.

She said, “So, it depends more on the quality of the relationship than it does on other factors.”

However, in today’s societal culture, the responsibility of parenting has largely fallen on mothers. Fathers are expected to solely provide, resulting in less time spent in the home and reduced involvement in childcare. Nevertheless, the Bible calls upon both fathers and mothers to nurture, teach, guide, and provide for their children, without assigning a specific gender to the role of parenting.

Therefore, let us join together in prayer today, asking that the church no longer conform to the world’s standards. Instead, let us pray for parents, both mothers and fathers, to embrace and fulfill the divine design that God has bestowed upon them.

A youth minister, passionate about reaching the next generation, shared a humble letter to parents urging reconciliation among family relationships.

A Humble Letter To Parents From A Youth Minister

Whinz Cerezo Garcia, a Filipino youth minister, shared his heart in a Facebook post because God nudged him to do so. He is a preacher passionate about reaching out to the younger generation. He often speaks to many students and encourages them to build “better relationships with their parents for that honors God.” But in that particular post, God led him to speak to the parents.

He admitted how, after a youth service, he felt a heavy burden from God that he couldn’t sleep well.

“..for God has been asking me to write not for the students but for the parents,” Whinz wrote.

The youth minister humbly stressed that he doesn’t “know how to raise a child.” However, he deeply “cares for the heart of God in the next generation.”

“I understand how difficult it is to handle teenagers, their selfishness, inconsistency, immaturity and insensitivity is indeed irritating,” he said. “But if we are not going to be patient with them then they will just grow up like that.”

Then the young minister encouraged, “So to all parents out there who might be able to read this, I pray that you will also have a heart like God in parenting your child.”

God’s Call To Parent And Child

Whinz pointed out God’s call to every parent towards their children.

“May you be the one who initiates conversation just like how God does it every day,” he added. “May you be able to speak the right words and do the right actions when you are trying to discipline them.. Be an example so they can grow up with an image of how they should live.. point them to God so they will understand that there is a perfect Parent who would fill the gaps of your parenting.”

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A CHRISTIAN PARENT & A CHRIST-CENTERED FAMILY

The youth minister hoped that his letter would speak to many parents. In doing so, it would help restore the parent-child relationship in every home.

But in the end, he also remarked a message for the young people to take note of. He advised, “..please be patient with your parents as well. Some of them never had the chance to process all their pain back in their childhood and teenager days, and that could be the reason why they do what they do.”

Then Whinz concluded his message: “But regardless of all the imperfections in our families, remember that we have a Father in heaven who is perfect in all of His ways, you can always count on Him everyday. My prayer for the parents and children goes with this letter. God is not finished with each generation yet. He is indeed in the business of restoring lives.”

A viral post on Facebook is resonating with thousands. It said, “stop saying it runs in the family. Jesus has given you authority to break generational curses in His Name.”

Generational Curses In A Family

Teressa Spearman, a Christian, shared her thoughts on Facebook about generational curses. She revealed her own struggle and story of being used by God to break a generational curse in her family. And her message blessed many who, perhaps, could relate to her journey. It reached over 10,000 shares and reactions.

If a person comes from a healthy, loving, and godly home, they have the opportunity to continue the legacy of their parents. But if someone comes from a violent or unhealthy and broken home, they still have to wrestle with breaking a generational cycle. And in most cases in the United States, “each year, millions of children are affected by the breakup of their families,” according to Legal Jobs.

Teressa wrote, “Generational curses affect generations due to rebellion against God.”

The Challenge of Breaking The Cycle

Once someone meets Jesus, their life is changed. And as a cycle-breaker, Teressa admitted there were days she wanted to give up because it’s really “a major challenge.”

She remarked that “everyday won’t be a good day,” but she isn’t giving up.

Teressa then detailed some attitudes she had to overcome to break the curse in her own family.

“I only serve one God no other idols come before my Heavenly Father,” she said. “Never hold grudges and always forgive others even when they wrong you. Still forgive them and teach yourselves children the same… Do right at all times and turn away from anything NOT of God.”

She also declared that all the chains would be broken in her, “correcting all wrongs and erasing wrongs being taught.”

Finally, Teressa said, “I thank God I found knowledge and wisdom to help me with the truth and continue to break the repeating patterns in my family.”

In Ephesians 5 Paul explains that the husband should be the leader of his family. God has designed men to be leaders. However, many husbands today are afraid or unable to lead their families. When that happens, it is often the woman who takes on that responsibility.

“Adam was supposed to tell Eve. He was supposed to be the spiritual leader, the head. What happens is when the man doesn’t lead, and the woman says, ‘Okay if you won’t lead, I’m going to lead here. Take this fruit, eat it. I think you should do what I do.’ And now look what happens. So when there’s that kind of imbalance in our marriage. It all falls apart,” the Grace Prosser said on her Instagram post.

Husband’s leadership

Men of God should be confident and bold enough to lead their families, that’s how God designed men. He is the one that gives the strength and wisdom to fulfill that role.

“So what I’m hearing you say is that you want me to lead. As a woman of God, at least you desire your husband to lead,” her husband answered.

Women of God, don’t be afraid of man’s leadership.

Grace went on to share, “Because I’m not threatened. I know who I am, I know who God’s called me to be and I’m not threatened by your leadership. I’m not threatened by you being the head of our family and house. I’m not threatened by you being the king because I know I’m the queen.”

Jennifer’s children started asking her why she kept calling out to them and trying to make them do stuff. But as they shared, she realized they weren’t hearing her voice. It was happening frequently, and the Moe family was concerned.

Meanwhile, Dean didn’t think it was spiritual, but would also hear footsteps coming up the stairs from the basement during night. He was prepared for a possible attack from an intruder, but that wasn’t the case.

God Delivers The Family

The couple’s son, Charles, often felt like someone was watching him when he was in the basement. Until one day, the door slammed, and he got locked inside the room. At that point, Jennifer finally acknowledged that demonic forces were tormenting her family.

Furthermore, Jennifer was experiencing the demonic torment because she couldn’t sleep well at night. So, the Christian couple decided to pray and fast.

One day, she was watching a program on The 700 Club, where the late Pat Robertson shared a word of knowledge.

Pat spoke to “somebody being tormented by demonic spirits.” He said, “you’re tormented, you can’t sleep. You’re seeing hallucinations and you can’t get free. You literally feel you’re going out of your mind.”

“In Jesus’ Name be free from this moment,” he declared.

Jennifer immediately claimed the Word for her family from the other side of the television. She prayed with Pat, and powerfully, the demons never returned since that day.

The Name of Jesus is so powerful! Every other name should bow down to His Name!

Nowadays, young kids generally want to have fun and play. The Prayer Room on Facebook posted a video of a little boy who was fully engaged worshiping God with his family!!

Family of Musicians

The young boy’s entire family sang and played musical instruments. Two of the young men played electric guitar and drums. Meanwhile, the adults sang along in harmony. The family sang “Open The Eyes of My Heart” together.

The little boy joined right in to worship the Lord. He sat on the couch, closed his eyes, and raised his hands to honor God and sing His praise.

Beautiful Family

The video captivated the hearts of over 30,000 people on Facebook, and thousands have shared it on their feed. Those who felt blessed and encouraged by the little boy also left comments.

Jackie Steele wrote, “Praise God bless you and your family love the way you praise God. Joyful noise thank you Lord Jesus amen.”

Another by Shirley Lafever added, “Must be so pleasing to God to see you praising Him as a family. Blessings to all of you.”

Some also commended how they’re such a “beautiful family.”

Indeed, nothing is more beautiful than a family who worships and honors the Lord together. This is the real family goals!

Family Of Slain Martyr In Libya Breaks Silence About His Christianity

The family of a slain martyr of faith in Libya has broken their silence about his faith and passing.

Sameh Salah Farouk Meawad was a 26-year-old husband and a father to his 2-year-old daughter. He traveled far from his home to be a worker to support his family. After 9 months since he left, he was finally about to go home but sadly, he was kidnapped on his way.

He was taken by a Jihadist militant organization along with 13 other Christians. The government tried to rescue them but was unable to save them from the ISIS. Days after the abduction, their kidnappers took their lives. His family believes that he was killed as a martyr of his faith in Jesus Christ.

His brother also said how proud they were of his decision of standing firm in his faith despite being in front of death.

“We thank God that He strengthened them in faith and didn’t be weakened before those unfaithful men… We thank Christ that He strengthened them in faith. They are martyrs and we’re going to be always proud of them. We’re going to intercede with them for all our lifetime.”

Christianity

Sameh’s wife also thanked God for the time they spent together and for her husband’s faith. She said that it was his husband’s faith that made her believe in Jesus Christ.

“I’m thanking God… I’m not sad at all. I knew my Christianity because my husband died as a martyr… I’m thanking God and may the Lord keep my daughter safe. I’m thanking God because since we got married, he used to tell me about God, miracles, and everything. I love God because of him… We are so proud of our Christianity,” his wife said.

Though this incident happened years ago, persecution of Christians is still happening today in some parts of the world. People are still dying for their faith. Let us pray that this kind of persecution would stop and for the safety of every believer.
