Dave Park, the senior pastor of Mosaic Christian Fellowship, shared three things he checks in young couples during pre-marital counseling to make sure they’re fit to be covenant partners.
Dave’s advice is important for young couples when it comes to marriage. These three things are key to having a thriving marriage.
Here are things he looks for in young couples:
1. Do they have a shared vision for life together?
It is important for a couple to share the same vision for their future. If two individuals have different plans for their family and their future, the chances are their relationship won’t work well.

2. Can they handle conflicts in a Biblical way?
“Do they have the consistent ability to overcome challenges and conflict together in a Biblical way? Or are all of their fights [are] just explosive and have no fruits,” pastor Dave asked.
Handling conflicts in a Biblical way is important in any relationship, especially marriage. A couple should resolve their conflicts in a righteous and healthy way to avoid hurting one another.

3. Do they have the shared faith?
“This one is really, really important. What I don’t mean is, is he a Christian? Is she a Christian? Then you guys are good. Many of you have Christian friends and you never talk about Christ with them. Now, you don’t really have a shared relationship with Christ. You merely have the same principles. What I’m looking for in a young couple is, is there enough overlap? Do they have a Christian relationship with each other? Is there a shared faith with one another? Or are they going to create a family where they just go the church… but there’s no soil of faith in their home for their kids?”
Pastor Dave ended his sermon by imparting important advice for young couples about marriage. The entire purpose of a marriage is to reveal Jesus to others through the marriage covenant.
The Gospel was and will always be our calling, and it is revealed in family.
“God says that His purpose for marriage is a showcase of the Gospel to this world and an incubator of holiness inside.”
