Stephen Foster testifies about a conversation in a bar he had with a stranger that changed his life. It happened during his first week of college. The incident set him on a path to experience God’s love, which had a huge impact on his life.
Conversation In A Bar
During his first week at the university, Stephen Foster was excited about the new chapter in his life. He was all about having the time of his life outside home. But on the first night, he met a girl that would eventually play a huge part in his life.
“I turned up at university and was really excited and looking forward to everything,” he said. “And the first night, I was out a few beers down in a bar and got chatting to this girl. I think she thought I was trying to chat her up.”
But the girl, whose name is Libby, said she was a Christian. At first, Stephen found it weird and said that he had some “kind of faith too.” Libby didn’t believe him and so she challenged Stephen to go to church with her the next day.
A Conversation In A Bar Changed His Life
“So she’s like, ‘No, I’m going to church tomorrow morning. Where are you staying? Tell me and I’ll call you. I’ll knock for you and we’ll go to church together,’” he recalled.
The next morning, Stephen forgot that they had that conversation. He carried on the night went home around 4 a.m., and fell asleep.

At 9 a.m., someone started banging on his college room door, and he thought there was a fire. Although he tried to ignore it, Libby’s banging on his door woke up other people.
“So I kind of grabbed some clothes and went with this girl to church, who was so annoying and I was so hungover. I felt miserable. The last place I wanted to be was in church. With drums and Naf electric guitars, all that stuff was going on. I was just like, ‘How do I get out? I need a drink, I need some paracetamol, I just need anything other than being here,” Stephen recalled.
Forever Changed
But unexpectedly, Stephen was deeply moved that Sunday at church. He went the second Sunday, and the third, and so on. He then realized that if it were not for his friend, Libby, he wouldn’t have gone.
“God’s been so kind to me in a hundred different ways and I’ve almost messed up my life in about a thousand different ways,” he said. “But one conversation at a bar changed everything. And I wouldn’t have gone there on my own. But someone knocked on my door at 9 a.m. woke me up from a drunken slumber and dragged me to church. So I’ll always be thankful for my dying day and beyond that, I had that conversation at that bar.”
