The Holy Spirit Helps Us Raise Our Kids

Do you need wisdom as you raise your children? You can trust that you are not alone. The Holy Spirit helps us raise our kids. There is a wonderful promise in the Bible that says, “Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not depart from it” (Proverbs 22:6). So what does it mean to train up a child in the way he or she should go?

The Holy Spirit Helps us Raise our Kids

He is called “The Helper” by Jesus. Do you trust that He can show you how to raise your kids? Each child has individual needs, so there is no one-size-fits-all, but there is a way to live rightly. The Way is Jesus.

God created a husband and a wife to raise a child in a way that emulates who He is as a Father. Now, not every child is raised by a mother and a father, for various reasons, but God is an amazing redeemer and He is wise. He has wisdom for you, as a parent, to raise your child in whatever circumstance. The Holy Spirit helps us raise our kids.

Jesus told the people, “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 18:3). Children have faith. Knowing this, you can teach your child what it means to live as a believer in Jesus.

We need to know how much the Father loves us so that we have love to give. We are not orphans! When we have a solid foundation of who are are in Christ, we will show our kids their true identity.

A child who knows her identity will not be swayed by the things of the world. When she knows that her heavenly Father loves her, she will not need the validation of the world.

Application

Everyday life is the way to train our children. It’s not just for Sunday mornings at church. We point children to Jesus by living in a way that honors Him. Our actions should match our words. “As the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without deeds is dead” (James 2:26).

Teach them the fruits of the Spirit by modeling the fruits of the Spirit. Teach them the Bible by having it deep down in your own heart. “For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” (Luke 6:45b).

Pray for your children. Find scriptures to pray over them.

For example:

“The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace” (Numbers 6:24-26).

^“I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe” (Ephesians 1:17-19a).

Prayer

Holy Spirit, thank you for helping me to raise my children. I believe that you are with me and that my children will follow Jesus all the days of their lives. I ask that you encounter them and give them wisdom. Heal them and shepherd them. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

Parenting With Holy Spirit

This word today is for moms and dads and caregivers and parents everywhere. We have such a beautiful role and assignment to raise our children, knowing the voice of God. To raise them as strong men and women who follow Jesus with everything in us. And to me, parenting is a huge journey with Holy Spirit.

I don’t know about you, but when I first became a mom, it was a whole new world of unknown. I was doing things I had never done before. I’d never had a baby before. There’s so many new things. There’s so many opinions and ideas being thrown at you, telling you you need to do this and you need to do this, and this is how you need to raise your kid. But I want you to know that while it is healthy to take wisdom from people that you trust and are doing it really well, but ultimately we need to lean into what Holy Spirit is saying about how we raise our kids.

Every person is different, every child is different, but no one knows your child more than Holy Spirit, and He wants to partner with us in raising our children. And it is such a journey for me to lean into Him. Maybe it looks like not leaning into fear. Fear can be a huge thing that wants to creep its way in. But it’s important that we say no to fear and say yes to what Holy Spirit is doing. And we don’t parent based off of fears, but we parent based off of wisdom and truth and what Holy Spirit is saying to us today.

So I just wanna pray for you all right now. Father, I thank you that you have given us this beautiful assignment to raise our children into powerful men and women of God who know who they are, who know who you are, God. And I pray that you would give every person watching today tools in their tool belt and strategies and ideas from heaven on how to parent their children really well. I feel like some of you are gonna get brand new ideas, maybe dreams in the night and new strategies on what your child needs in this season. And I just wanna pray grace over you, that God could have picked anyone on the planet to parent your children, but He chose you. That means that you have what it takes to raise your children really well. So I just wanna bless you and encourage you and say you are doing a good job.

Train Up A Child

Train up a child in the way he should go and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Now the key here is, train up a child in the way he should go. Not every child is going to do the same thing. And so I would say that it really has to do with letting go of fear of what your child will become, letting go of fear of the mistakes they might make, and remembering that you’re establishing a foundation with them.

So if I’m waking up in the morning and I’m reading my Bible and I’m praying every day, if I’m reading my Bible before I go to bed, if I’m responding to a crisis or a problem with prayer, that is training my kids. Your kids are watching what you’re doing and how you respond to life, and also how you respond to the mistakes that they make. You know, it says that the kindness of God leads to repentance. We are not called to live in fear. It says in the Bible that we have not been given a spirit of fear, but of power of love and a sound mind. And I that’s what I want for my kids. I want them to know that they’ve been given a spirit of power and of love and a sound mind, because when we have sound minds, we’re able to make godly decisions.

And so I just want to pray for you today, that if you’re having any fear about which way your child is going, declare over them, that you have taught them and that they are going to stay in the right way, and they will not turn from it even when they’re old. So I just want to pray over you today, and just pray for your kids. God, I thank you that your promise says that if we train up a child in the way that he should go, or she should go, that when they’re old, they will not turn from it. So God, I just declare that our children are safe in your hands, that our children have sound minds. They have power, love, and a sound mind within them, and that they make good choices, and that they walk in love, and they know who they are in Christ. In Jesus’ Name. Amen.

Feeling Stressed Out By Motherhood? These 4 Truths Will Help

Being a mom is the greatest blessing this life has to offer. There is no greater joy nor depth of love and I can’t imagine life without my kids. There. Disclaimer made to silence the haters. And now on with my point: motherhood may also singlehandedly bring the most pain, worry, regret and fear this side of the sun and it just keeps a comin.’ Here are some battle-won truths to hopefully encourage the hearts of all similarly-spirited moms feeling guilty, frustrated and truthfully ready to throw in the maternal towel.

#1 Motherhood. Say No To Guilt.

Guilt is the worst. And women seem to suffer the worst of it. I’ve heard from hundreds of moms through the years feeling guilty that they’ve not raised their kids well enough, or don’t care enough (keepin’ it real!), have made regrettable mistakes or just aren’t “enough” for their kids….and the list goes on. No wonder we’re exhausted and feeling defeated all the time! I still suffer from bouts myself, but here’s a truth that’s helped through the years: no matter what the lying voice of the enemy whispers in our ear, we love our kids. We are enough. And they will be okay.

We have to learn to let go of past mistakes and misgivings (and I’ve made some doozies) and focus on the present moments we have left with our kids. Or else we’re going to lose our joy, strength and our ability to be better than we were yesterday. I don’t care what that overachieving Proverbs 31 wife was doing, most of us do not feel born for this. Every rollicking season of motherhood…. The toddler years, middle school… early adulthood… has taken me as an open-mouthed fool and I still feel clueless. We have to give our failures to God, and just move on. We have to forgive ourselves for not living up to whatever Pinterest-fueled delusions we had before motherhood, and just focus on today. Which leads us to the next point…

#2 Stop The Worrying

I realize this is virtually impossible, as we’re genetically disposed to worry over the welfare of our kids but there is a huge difference between normal every day concern and biting our nails off with fear over everything….are they getting made fun of at school, are they going to get home safe from the party tonight? Are they depressed? The two-year-old’s speech is still super slurred…does she have learning disability?

It’s so impossible to block out the poison of worry over our kids but we’re only funneling our energy into worthless channels and again, choking out the joy of life. We need to give our worries to God. He loves them more than we do. He has specific plans for their lives, and he intentionally implanted them into your hands. Concerns will always be there, but we have to transfer our fears and need for protective control over to the Lord or it’ll wear us down into a bag of wrinkles and early grays. And this mama ain’t havin’ that.

#3 This Too Shall Pass

Now that I’ve seen my oldest through every season of life, I can confidently say that the difficult, seemingly impossible seasons of child rearing, will pass. It just doesn’t feel believable when you’re in the middle of a full fledge, apocalypse-level teenage rebellion, navigating your 8 year-old’s Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, or your kids’ emotional outbursts post-divorce. These seasons can almost undue us. But it does pass.

It’s just hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel when our heart’s feel tortured and broken over issues with our kids. I’ve had a breathtakingly stubborn toddler who at 14 is the most obedient tender, kid. Try and keep the “big picture” in mind when you’re going through an exasperating motherhood issue. They’ll work through it. They mature, they adjust, and so do we. Circumstances eventually change and with prayer, we will stand on the other side of that season with your head held high and your kids will be fine.

#4 Stop Comparing Yourself To Other Moms

1 Corinthians 4:7 says “comparison is the thief of joy,” and man is that right. I suffer the mixed blessing of being sister to one of the best humans and mothers ever to walk the green Earth. She homeschools her seven kids, has adopted four children, is a Foster Care parent, and when I say she’s had a smile on her face every day since I’ve known her, it’s through truthful, gritted teeth.

I have of course benefitted from my sister’s guidance and help through the decades but it hasn’t been fun being the haphazard, unhinged type of mom I am, (which I’ve coined “UnMom”) I don’t thrive in the area of domesticity. My biggest mistake as a younger mom was trying to emulate my motherhood style with those around me and it was just so depressing. It took years to realize the parts of me that weren’t a good mom, that were just less tangible.
