In another episode of GOD TV’s True Vine Stories, Rev. Betty King addresses the overwhelming problem today because of social media—the comparison culture.
Comparison Culture
It’s undeniable how social media has greatly influenced the generation today. In fact, almost every person around the world seems to own a smartphone. And each one browsing through Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and other social media sites. It’s not bad until it shapes our thoughts and leads us to build a culture that slowly destroys how a person sees himself or herself.
“It’s got good uses. But if you’re not content with yourself, you’ll be on these pages comparing yourself to everyone,” Betty pointed out.
She also highlights the Scripture in Isaiah 55:8, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord.
“Nobody knows what goes on behind the scenes. We see all these pictures and you think they’re doing better than me. It might be true that they’re doing better than you. But you don’t know what they’ve gone through or you don’t know how they got there,” she said.
Stop Comparing
Then Betty urged everyone to stop comparing and instead learn from each other. She said, “Instead of comparing yourself to them that would lead to envy, jealousy, and pride and all sorts of things, why don’t we learn from each other? It’s very important to learn from someone. Just listen to their story behind the breakthrough.”
She points out how comparison could mean “digging a hole for yourself.”
“And I don’t believe that that’s God’s Will,” she stressed.
Then Betty challenges believers to actively pursue God’s purpose for their lives instead of looking into the lives of others.
“You will only find strength when you are doing God’s will. You will only find strength and joy when you are fulfilling the passions that God has placed in your heart. So that you will be not looking around as to what others are doing.”
