I once heard a quote about burnout that really just encouraged my heart, in a season where I felt like I was going through burnout and I wasn’t sure how to continue forward or how to find rest. And it was, “We’re not always burnt out, because we’re doing too much of what we don’t love to do, but we’re sometimes are burnt out because we’re not doing enough of what we actually love to do.” So we’re not filling our buckets with things that actually refresh us to the point where we can then go and pour out to other people.
And so I think that in this season, if you feel like you’re giving too much, I want you to encourage you to find things that the Lord has put on your heart, things that you love to do. Take a second, write down one or two, or three things that really make you come alive in your day-to-day life. And I want you to also pull out your calendar and make sure you implement them into your day-to-day life. So put them on your calendar for this week, for next week. And I want you to see over the next couple months, if your capacity grows to pour out, if you see just this increase of zest for ministry or whatever you feel like you’re giving a lot of your time to.
And obviously there can be seasons of actually pulling back, reevaluating what we’re giving our commitments to. But I think that while you’re in the process of figuring out, what do I pull back from? What do I give my time to? I want you to implement things that are actually life-giving and see if that changes your capacity. So I just encourage you to do that. I encourage you to find friends to do that with, to ask the people around you, “What makes you come alive?” “What things can I encourage you in today?” What kind of things in this season, do you need a friend to make sure that you’re going after that you’re getting filled up with? Because we’re not meant to do this alone. And I think that it’s so important to do with community.
So grab a friend, talk about the things that make you come alive, make time to do that with each other. And I would just encourage you to see what the next couple of months look like from that. So be blessed and know that God has you on this amazing journey, and that there’s peace and abundant joy available in it as well.
