In 2 Corinthians 10:5, Paul wrote the church of Corinth: “We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.”

“The Bible tells us to take every thought captive and make it subject to Christ,” he explained. “Notice it doesn’t say ignore the thoughts you don’t like. It didn’t simply neglect the negative thoughts. It says to take every thought captive and make it submit to the Word of God.”

Spiritual Warfare

With that, Colby advised facing head-on those thoughts that are not from God. And not to forget that it is a spiritual battle.

“See, Paul’s using language of warfare here,” he said. “You have an enemy. Thoughts that set themselves up in opposition to God. And so you take it prisoner, you question it, you interrogate it. You ask it, ‘where did you come from? Who sent you? What root door of insecurity did you walk through? What lie did you believe to get here?’”

Furthermore, the evangelist emphasized the importance of acknowledging these ungodly thoughts. It is only by acknowledging them that one can begin to dismantle their influence over their lives and replace them with God’s truth. In this way, a believer would have to learn to overcome destructive narratives and receive God’s peace that surpasses all understanding.

“And then after you collect enough data to help you the next time they come around, you subject that thought to the truth of God’s Word,” he remarked. “And that’s how you win the battle of the mind.”

Worrying is entering into a state of unbelief

Worrying has been a hobby Christians unconsciously treasure. Despite God’s promise and command not to worry, His children often forget about it. But for Colby, worrying is a hidden expression of doubt in God. Therefore, Christians have to do away with it.

Colby explained that worrying puts one’s focus on one’s own capabilities and strengths, diminishing God’s strength and highlighting one’s weakness. He said, “Worry says, ‘Depends upon me, my own money, intellect, work ethic… my problem solving can save me from my situation.'”

He then referred to 1 Peter 5:6-7 to further support his point. It says, “Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:6-7)

According to Colby, humility places a person to depend solely on God and not on themselves, and then, they can fully cast their cares to Him, who greatly cares. He said, “Humility enables us to cast our worries on God because humility opens our eyes to the mighty hand of God over our lives. It positions us under His power and authority.”

Furthermore, it increases a person’s faith and trust in God as it gives recognition to God’s power and might. He continued, “Humility swaps our self-dependence for faith and trust in God, acknowledging that God can mend what I cannot.”

As such, Colby encouraged everyone to trust God with all their hearts and honor God in everything they do. Proverbs 3:5-6 says, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways, acknowledge Him, and He will make straight your paths.”
