New series Netflix’s “Beef” depicted the most accurate church scenario we’ve ever seen on screen with secular films.
Netflix’s “Beef”
“Beef” is a new Netflix series with a dark comedy theme about two strangers with anger problems. What captured the attention of the Christian community is how well they depicted a church scenario starting in episode 3. In the series’ third episode titled “I Am Inhabited By A Cry,” the lead character, Daniel, hit rock bottom.
While being frustrated in his room, he found a pamphlet from a church on his desk, which led him to go to church as his last resort. He entered the church’s door after hesitating for some time. Daniel was welcomed joyfully by the pastor and as he walked towards his seat, the worship started.
Church Scene
The desperate and hopeless character was moved by the lyrics of the worship song “Come To The Altar.” Daniel looked around and saw the congregation worshiping God and pouring their hearts out to Him. Despite his best attempt, he started crying and singing as the bridge of the worship song hits its peak. That’s when the pastor came to him and prayed for him.
“Jesus, heavenly God, please be with my brother, our new family member. We ask You to shower him with Your unconditional love. Thank You,” the pastor prayed.
After leaving the church, he met with a friend and told him that he has felt God’s presence that day. In episode seven, Daniel was shown leading the church in worship with the upbeat rendition of the song “Amazing Grace.”
“Today man, I really felt something today. It’s like I actually felt God’s presence,” Daniel said.
Steven Yeun
For Steven Yeun, playing the role of Daniel, the scene allowed him to step into something he has experienced in his own life. The 39-year-old Hollywood Korean actor was raised in a Christian family, he even led worship for a while. As an immigrant, the church has been his only real safe place.
“As an immigrant kid growing up in the Midwest, that was really my only real safe space,” Steven said in an interview. “…I just found myself nearing tears every single time they start singing praise songs. I’m just like, ‘Why am I about to cry? What is happening?’”
That worship scene stood out because of how accurate it is to an actual church experience. It feels sincere, authentic, and familiar to the Christians unlike how other secular films depict church services in their scenes. The scene is clearly written by people who have first-hand experience worshipping the Lord that’s why it worked well.
