The church is not a building. We are called to be the Church. Church is also not a polished list of structured ministries and events. Church is relationship. It’s messy because people are messy, but it’s what we are called to. Church is something we are, not something we do. Acts 2 shows a picture of the earliest form of the Church.
Be The Church
We must look to the Word of God to see what “Church” is and we can find that in Acts 2:42-47,
“42 They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. 43 Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. 44 All the believers were together and had everything in common. 45 They sold property and possessions to give to anyone who had need. 46 Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, 47 praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.”
There are no programs or events outlined in this passage of scripture. The Church being the Church is living it out in relationship. To be the Church we must study the Word together, fellowship together, take communion together, pray together, give to those who have needs, meet together, and eat meals together in our homes.
Reflect
- Does your understanding of the Church reflect Acts 2:42-47? Why or why not?
- What roadblocks prevent you from being the Church?
- How have you experienced Acts 2:42-47 with other believers?
- What are some things you could change and/or add to your life in order to be the Church?
- Do you have people in your home? Why or why not?
- How often do you pray for others on a regular basis?
- Do you take communion outside of the Church building? Why or why not?
- What is one thing you can do to be the Church this week?
