A group of courageous Christian volunteers in Hong Kong mediate between protesters and police hoping to bring peace.
Christian Volunteers
As the protests calling for democracy in Hong Kong rage on, a group led by pastor Roy Chan headed out to the frontline of the chaos. Good Neighbor North District Church members began mediating between the clashing protesters and the police.
The ultimate goal of the Christian volunteers is to spread peace, more specifically, to bring peace for the sake of protecting the children.
“During this period, our church started the Protect the Children operation,” pastor Roy explained. “We wear these yellow vests and fan out to different protest locations. Where there is conflict, we try to meditate, either between citizens and protesters or between protesters and police.”
They do this for God.
“As a Christian,” he added, “this is what I can do for society, for God.”
The group is made up of parents, elderly church members, and teenagers working together courageously. Each morning, the volunteers gathered to pray and then split up into groups of seven and disperse. The groups go throughout the city where there is protesting. They then form a human chain in hopes of slowing the police advancement and violent confrontations between the opposing parties.

If violence takes place, they offer medical help to those affected and even warns the protesters of oncoming attacks. The group believes that soon, their efforts will pay off and peace will be restored throughout Hong Kong.
“If more people join us, I believe that we’ll be able to protect more children. We could talk more to both sides, and there would be fewer injuries. I believe our work is not totally ineffective. I believe that as we head out with love, it will make more young people and Hong Kongers remain hopeful in these sad times,” pastor Roy said.
