Today, I would love to speak to you about leadership. Acts 20:28 says, “Pay careful attention to yourselves and to all the flock in which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers to care for the church of God, which he obtained with his blood.” Something about leadership for me is that I do not take it lightly. I think it’s actually a really big deal, and I think Paul also agrees with that. In James 3:1, he says, “Not many of you should become teachers, my brothers, for you know that we who teach will be judged with greater strictness.”
Something that I think that really can lend itself to us in taking our leadership more seriously is avoiding and really pushing away the victim mentality. If there is a, you know, a broken piece of wood in your fence that is around your flock, and you know, a sheep gets out and gets injured, whose fault is that? It’s ours, right? It’s our fence. We are meant to be over these things, and we can’t put the blame on the sheep. We can’t put the blame on, you know, your assistant shepherd or something like that.
What I really love about leadership actually, is the challenge to ownership. A great book on this is called Extreme Ownership by a Navy Seal, and he talks about the depth of ownership that we can actually have in our leadership roles, and how it actually lends strength to the people that we’re leading. And it actually creates an environment of trust. When the people that you’re leading know that you’re gonna cover them, that if they make a mistake, you’re actually gonna say, “Well, yeah, you may have executed that mistake, but it’s actually on me.” They know that they can trust you, and you’re building a stronger team by doing that.
So, something I wanna encourage you today as a leader, you know, and we all lead in different areas. You may lead in your family, in your friendships, or in your work environment. We all lead in different capacities. And something I wanna challenge you with today is taking greater ownership. When something happens on your team that you didn’t expect to happen, take ownership of that and say, “Okay, you know what? That didn’t go the way that I planned, but how can I actually own it and step up to the plate and do better next time?” I think it’s a really empowering place to stand. It creates a ton of trust with your team and also with the people that are maybe above you. And so I think the Lord takes leadership very seriously and I think that we should, too.
So if you’re in any area of leadership, I really do encourage you to take it even more seriously, to own every area of it and really start to, you know, inquire the Lord on how He sees it, and what He expects from us as leaders. So, I bless you today to lead well and to take greater levels of ownership.
