The Unique Experience Of Groves Christian College

Education varies from school to school, state to state, and country to country. And Groves Christian College is no different. This school is in Queensland, Australia. They are not a college in the traditional American sense. The facility is an infant through High School teaching center. The school is broken up into three different campuses where the grade levels are called Phases.

Groves Christian College: Early Learning Center

This campus is where children begin their educational journey. The Early Learning Center is for children age 15 months to 5 years of age. Students complete the Early Phase at this location.

Early Phase – During this initial stage of schooling, children are introduced to community interaction with other kids and teachers. The school also includes in the learning process the early stages of reading, writing, and mathematics.

Campus 1

Traditionally, the three phases taught here would include Kinder through High School (excluding year 3-6)

Foundation Phase – Kinder through 2nd grade. Children begin a formal classroom education through this stage. Lessons are age-appropriate with activities in math, reading, writing, and interaction with peers. All lessons have a Christ-centered focus. Children are taught to take ownership of their education; this instills the values students need to progress through future phases.

 

Groves Christian College Campus 2

Traditionally Grades 3 through 6. After the Foundational Phase, students migrate over to Campus 2 for the next Phase, to return to Campus 1 for the final two stages.

Middle Phase – Grades 3 through 6. In addition to advancing skills a student learns in the Foundational phase, children are studying problem-solving skills. This is primarily evident in the math curriculum. Other subjects are added to the base to enrich a child’s education. Arts, Health, and PE are part of a student’s learning. They are also introduced to competing in team sports. Netball, Rugby, and Touch Football are a sample of what is available.

The Return to Campus 1

After a few years at Campus 2, students return to Campus1 to complete their final two stages.

Intermediate Phase – 7th grade through 9th; Jr. High. Adding to all the children are learning up till now, and advancing into the teen years, students are developing skills in community and working together and encouraging each other. During this Phase, students attend camps and excursions that challenge them physically and spiritually while learning to work as a team. Team sports are also part of the options available. Added opportunities are performing arts and extracurricular clubs.

Senior Phase – 10th grade, through 12th; High School. Pulling together everything a student has learned thus far, an educational path is laid. Here preparation for the next phase of life begins. Decisions about university options, career choices, and future work are confusing. GCC teaches students to make wise decisions through the education process in this Phase. Groves Christian College works alongside students to help them prepare for the future and realize their aspirations. This process develops a student’s Package Pathway.

Groves Christian College: Package Pathways

During the Senior Phase, students work toward their graduation certificate. All the while, they are on a career path that lines up with their future plans. There are three Package Pathways for students to follow.

    • Workforce Ready – This package is for those who plan to enter the workforce straight out of Groves Christian College. No further education or training is necessary other than on the job training that will come with your hired position.
    • Uni-Ready – This package is for students who plan to attend a school of higher education. Their studies take them on a path that prepares them for university studies. They are ready for the workforce. However, their position requires an advanced studies degree to some level.
    • Blended – The students in this package are also workforce ready, but their position may require a vocational certificate and not necessarily a university degree.

All three Package Pathways create a way for students to be ready for the world that awaits them with a solid education and a Christ-centered worldview.

While the differences between the structure of education, there is little difference between American and Australian learning. As parents, we want to do something about it. Sometimes that means teaching our children ourselves. Then we have better control of what and how they learn. We can maintain a Godly worldview through a Christian Homeschool Curriculum.

What is Homeschooling?

Homeschooling’s definition is in its name. It is assuming the role of the teacher and instructing your child at home versus sending them off to public school.  This is a big decision and a major commitment. There are a few hoops to jump through; you cannot just one day decide to begin teaching from home. There is also a standardized curriculum that must be purchased.

Before you begin, you must understand state laws and what is required to be able to have a homeschool. Each state has its licensing procedure, so check with the education department of your state for further details. They may also have a minimum requirement as to the courses taught.

Many parents feel that the overwhelming reason to homeschool a child is due to the negative environment most schools have nowadays. They offer a program for 3rd grade through High School. The benefit of online course work is in the grading and tracking process; the system does it for you. They also teach electives such as Computer and Foreign Language.

While in most cases a Christian High School requires tuition, the benefits of applying could outweigh the financial costs of attending.

Schools design the structure to assist students in remaining focused on their education.

 

  1. Advancement Opportunities. When you attend a Christian High School, this helps prepare you for a Christian college or university. The structure gives you an advance preview of what one can expect of a college student. Advancement also lies in the school itself. If it is affiliated with a particular denomination or organization, then that school could have inroads to specific colleges. This access can provide scholarships, grants, or discounts when a student wants to further their education.

 

  1. Christian Education. Another added benefit is the inclusion of Biblical Study. The Bible is pretty much forbidden within a public-school setting. You are restricted from carrying it, much less teach from it. Within a Christian setting, this restriction does not exist. What is Accelerated Christian Education?

Accelerated Christian Education began in Garland, Texas in 1970. It was founded by Donald and Esther Howard. The couple felt led by God to assist pastors, parents with individualized Biblically-based education for children. They began taking textbooks and breaking them down into individual programs called PACEs. These packets are filled with self-instructional activities to help stir the desire to learn and give educators greater success with teaching children outside of the normal classroom setting.

How P.A.C.E. Is Benefiting Education?

PACE stands for Packet of Accelerated Christian Education. They are smaller portions of a textbook to help teachers teach, and students learn. Each packet is similar to a chapter or unit of a conventional textbook. This breakdown allows students to work at their own pace and based on their learning ability. So, instead of a typical school grade level, students of the ACE program work on various levels. Once a student masters one level, they can move onto the next. It is not uncommon for a student to have a level 5 Science, level 4 Math, and a level 5 English.

How Can a Packet of Accelerated Christian Education Help My Family?

There is another name for Accelerated Christian Education programs; homeschooling. While homeschooling is the method, ACE is the curriculum that homeschooling is based on. To understand the benefits, let’s first explore how it works.

How PACE Works

    • How to Begin – Each PACE has goals, a Bible verse, and a character trait to learn. The expectations are laid out, and the child takes on the responsibility of achieving their outline of goals.

There are eight core subjects: Math, English, Literature and Creative Writing, Social Studies, Science, Word Building, and Bible Reading. Each of these breaks down into 12 PACEs.
    • Other Skills Taught – In addition to the core curriculum, there are Multimedia software suites where students can learn to type, improve reading and math skills, and improve grammar skills.
    • Extra-Curricular Activities – Just as a standard school has elective courses, ACE has a wide variety of courses to enhance a child’s learning ability as they grow into the program. Classes in Business, Fine Arts, and Foreign languages are all available.

What are the Benefits of PACE?

    • First, you have options. It places you in the driver seat of your child’s education. You get to see firsthand how they react to educational situations and learn about their strengths as well as their weaknesses. Your child does not get lost in the shuffle of the other twenty students in the classroom. It’s about the one-on-one attention your child receives.
    • Second, your child can work at their own pace. Every child learns at a different level. When you multiply this by twenty, then you can begin to understand why teachers have such a difficult job. Different mannerisms, different attention spans, and different disabilities prevent children from all learning at the same pace. ACE Curriculum works with each child, giving them a greater chance of success.
    • Finally, with the program being Christian based, there is a core subject of Bible Study. You will not find that at your local public education facility. In fact, the entire ACE program teaches Christ at the center of the learning process.
