More and more Christian athletes are emerging to share the Gospel with the world. Leveraging their influence and fame, they utilize all they possess to spread the message of Jesus’ love. One such Christian athlete is the 22-year-old Houston Texans quarterback, CJ Stroud. The ascending NFL star unequivocally proclaimed his faith by including “Follower of Christ” in his social media page’s bio.
As the son of a former pastor, CJ grew up with knowledge of Jesus. However, it was during his college years that he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior.
“When I got to college, I found Christ for myself,” CJ said. “It’s definitely something that I’m still learning to this day. I’m definitely not perfect. … It does keep me grounded; it does keep me humble just because I know anything can be stripped away at any point. I feel like God put me on this platform to preach his word.”
CJ admitted that he did not have a privileged upbringing like other elite quarterbacks, but the trials he encountered helped strengthen his faith.
He said in a press conference, “A lot of people don’t get to live the life I do. It’s hard, don’t get me wrong. It’s hard, but it’s a privilege, man. I’m blessed enough to wake up every day — to walk, to talk, to smell, to interact with people, to play football. These are all things we take for granted on a day-to-day basis, but I try to do my best to thank God through all that because [of] His grace and His mercy.”
“He laid His life on the cross for us. I really believe that. This is bigger than just ball, and if I have to use football for my purpose — to spread the Gospel and the life of Jesus Christ — then I’ll do that. And I think that’s what God wants.”
